Gordonsburg/ Little Swan News

Series: Gordonsburg | Story 3

We have had a fall week of weather and the first day of fall included in the weekend. It was in the forties and fifties at night and most days was in the sixties or low seventies. There was plenty of rain and the creeks were up and even got out in some areas of the county. It crossed Little Swan Creek Road between the big steel bridge and the little bridge in the low area just after you get on Little Swan from Claude Carroll Road. I went through about 5:00 p.m. and the water was just beginning to cross, but when I came home around 7:30, I came around by Highway 412.

Those I know of who are sick either at home, hospital or nursing home are: G.Y. Bennett, Connie Bonner, Dorothy Brown, Amy Carroll (will have had her surgery by the time this is published so pray for her), Joann Carroll, Kathleen Carroll, Tommy Carroll, Spencer Clark, Fada Clay, Linda Churchwell, Bailey Cromwell, Tommy Edwards, Ray Kilpatrick, Monette King, Colben Ly, Jackie McFall, Bill Moore, Shirley Reeves, Marsha Runions, Mona Runions, Jim and Jan Walker, Diane White, and Annette Williams. Please pray for these in your daily prayers and remember others who are sick with the virus and in places where people are suffering persecution.

Happy birthday to Hailey Meriwether, Logan Morris, and John Reeves October 2nd, Shirley Carroll, Retha Graham, and Burton Graham the 3rd, Patsy Carroll and Peggy Sood the 4th, Paige Roberson, Kelsie Peery and Glenda Atkinson the 5th, and Nathaniel Lee Rittenberry the 6th. We wish for all of these a very happy birthday and many more to celebrate.

Happy anniversary to Eddie and Marlene Holt on October 7. We wish for this couple many more years to celebrate life together.

Our sympathy goes out to the families of Virginia Elizabeth Kelley, Margaret Ann Holley, Sara Marchelles (nee Bates), Ricky Joel Weems, Charles “Shane” Newbold III, Helen L. Garrett, Janie Marylin Gilbert, Jerry D. Milan, and Brenda Whitten. We are praying for these families and any others who have lost loved ones that we do not know about.

The Historical Society of Lewis County held a meeting at the Lewis County Public Library on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. Several attended the meeting which was about the Palestine Cemetery in Lewis County which was at one time located in Hickman County until that land was annexed to Lewis County. Several from the group then traveled to the cemetery and did some grave witching, or dousing as some say, and some paver stones were placed by some graves with the help of Barry and Deanna Carroll and their son and friend along with others. The stones were purchased by Barry and Deanna. This will be a great help to some trying to locate burial sites in the cemetery although we don’t know who they belong to. The information on the cemetery was presented by Dorothy Warf after much help from the staff at the library and from Cynthia Kilpatrick.

Hoping you have a great week and enjoy the cooler weather which allows some to be out that can’t be out much when the weather is so hot as we had a few weeks ago. It is a great time to see the changing colors in the woods and the movement of wildlife along the roads in the fields and places.

By the time many of you read this paper, the October Heritage Festival will be in full swing and there will be lots of things going on around the area. Be sure to check other parts of the Herald for information as to what will be going on where and what time. There will be lots of music and many vendors with all kinds of wares around the town and area, as well as lots of yard sales. If you are in a hurry you might not want to travel Hwy. 20 for it is usually covered almost to Summertown with yard sales and vendors with their wares for sale.
