Shane was born in Owensboro, Kentucky, on June 29, 1956, to Charles Elliott Newbold Jr. and Lois Marie Richards.

Shane was a retired elementary school teacher, and was a founding partner of Validity magazine, serving in the role of managing editor. He was a devoted and loving husband, father and son.
