Daylight savings time ends

Get ready to fall back into longer nights starting Sunday, November 7, 2021, at 2 a.m. when Daylight Saving Time concludes and clocks turn back an hour.

The coming days will continue to get shorter with Wednesday being the last day the sun sets later than 6 p.m. until March 11, 2022. Sun lovers have no need to fret though as days begin to get longer starting December 21, 2021, when the winter solstice arrives. From there, sunsets will be pushed back later and later until the summer solistice on June 21, 2022.

So when you're getting ready for bed on the first Sunday of November, remember to turn your clock back an hour and get ready for an extra hour of sleep.

Fun Facts About Daylight Saving Time

• Hawaii and most of Arizona do not observe Daylight Saving Time. U.S. Territories of Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa and the U.S. Virgin Islands also do not participate.

• The idea of efficiently using daylight can be attributed to Benjamin Franklin in the late 1700s, who jokingly wrote, "encourage the economy of using sunshine instead of candles."

• WWI was the first time Daylight Saving Time was officially put into practice when the German Empire set their clocks ahead by an hour in order to use less power and save fuel.

• The U.S. adopted the idea in 1918 but the bill was repealed only seven months later. President Roosevelt brought it back during WWII and called it, "War Time."

• It wasn't until the Uniform Time Act of 1966 that Daylight Saving Time was officially established for the U.S. as a whole.
