The Lewis County Lady Panthers and Panthers basketball team hosted the Hickman County Lady Bulldogs and Bulldogs for the first home game of the 2021-22 basketball season on Tuesday, October 26th. The teams faced off in 4 games, junior varsity girls and boys teams played prior to the start of varsity action.
The Lady Panthers junior varsity team took the floor at 4:00 p.m. to start the night against the Lady Bulldogs junior varsity. Early in the first half Lewis County pulled out in front behind the play of Stailee Moseley, Jazalyn Conner, and BB Smith, each of whom provided tough defense and transition baskets to take the lead to 13-4 at the half.
The Lady Panther JV limited the Lady Bulldog JV to one free-throw in the last fifteen minutes of junior varsity play and claimed a 28-5 win.
Stailee Moseley and Jazalyn Conner each had 8 points for the Lady Panther JV, BB Smith added 7, Paisley Kellogg and Zoey Collins 2 each, and Ella Middleton 1 point.
The Panthers junior varsity boys took the floor at 5:00 at take on the Bulldogs junior varsity. In a back-and-forth matchup the teams exchanged leads in the first half after the Panthers fell behind early.
In the second half it was the Lewis County JV that controlled the tempo, but the Bulldogs JV wouldn't go away as they fought to the final, but Lewis County's junior varsity came away with a 20-17 win.
Brogan Arledge led the Panther JV with 6, Phenix McDonald had 5, Maddox Tanner 4, Carter Stewart 3, and Kobe Feichtinger 2 in the win.
The varsity games began at 6:00 when the Lady Panthers took the floor against the Lady Bulldogs. The Lady Panthers struggled from the tip, allowing the Lady Bulldogs to start the game on a 10-0 run. The Lady Panthers fought back midway in the first, matching the Lady Bulldogs basket for basket and trailed 17-7. Lewis County struggles continued to start the second quarter as they were only able to score three in the period, all from Klayr Shepherd, as they fell behind 26-10 at the half.
The Lady Panthers responded with their best quarter of play in the third coming out of the half. Lewis County outscored the Lady Bulldogs 11-8 in the period, led by Haylee Carroll's 7 points to trim the lead to 13. Hickman County doubled up the Lady Panthers in the fourth on their way to a 42-25 win.
Haylee Carroll led Lewis County with 9 points, 5 rebounds, 3 steals, and an assist, Klayr Shepherd had 7 points, 1 rebound, and 3 steals, Addie Osborne 4 points, 3 rebounds, and a steal, Gabii Ortiz 4 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 steals, Jazalyn Conner 1 point and 5 rebounds, Aryn Shepherd 4 rebounds and an assist, and Emery Norris 5 rebounds, 2 blocks, and a steal. The loss took the Lady Panther record to 3-4.
The Panthers took the floor in the final game of the night against the Bulldogs. The Panthers seized control of the game early with a 12-0 first quarter that saw 4 different players add to the total. The Panther offense went cold as the Bulldogs stormed back in the second quarter. The Panthers were held to a lone Kobe Feichtinger bucket as the visitors closed the gap to 14-8 at the half.
Lewis County came out after the half with energy on both ends of the floor as they outscored Hickman County 14-8 in the third with 6 points from Maddox Tanner and 5 from Dakota Hull and claimed a 28-16 lead heading into the fourth. But the Bulldogs had a little fight left as the outscored the Panthers 17-9 in the fourth and overcame a 12-point deficit with 2 minutes left in regulation, but the comeback fell short as the Panthers held on for a 37-33 victory.
Maddox Tanner had 14 points, 1 rebound, 3 steals, and an assist for the Panthers. Dakota Hull 12 points, 1 rebound, 6 steals, 2 blocks, and 2 assists, Jalen Smith 5 points, 10 rebounds, 2 steals, 1 assist, and 1 block, Bo Banks 4 points, 6 rebounds, 2 steals, and an assist, Kobe Feichtinger 2 points and a steal, Drew Ray 3 rebounds, 3 steals, and an assist, and Phenix McDonald 2 rebounds and an assist. The win took the Panthers record to 5-2.
The Lady Panthers and Panthers travel to Linden on Tuesday, November 2nd to take on the Lady Vikings and Vikings.
