LCHS basketball play

The Lewis County High School Lady Panthers were back on the hardwood on Tuesday night, November 30th, as they travelled to Hampshire to take on the Lady Hawks and Hawks.

Coming off a tough loss the night before versus Wayne County, the Lady Panthers matched the Lady Hawks early on after the tip. Mya Siever had 5 first-quarter points as the Lady Panthers led 12-10 after eight minutes. The Lady Panthers struggled in the second quarter as the Lady Hawk defense held Lewis County to a lone Kerrigan Reeves free-throw and pulled out to a 25-13 halftime lead. Hampshire would continue to pull away in the second half as they outscored the Lady Panthers 11-7 in the third and held a 36-20 lead as play moved on the the fourth quarter. Lewis County went on a quick run to start the fourth quarter, but the Lady Hawks would pull away to a 46-28 win, handing the Lady Panthers their fifth-straight loss to open the season. Mya Siever had 10 points for the Lady Panthers, Serenity Warman added 9, Kerrigan Reeves 6, Blayr Clayton 2, and Jayden Moore 1.

The Panthers took the floor in the second game hoping to rebound off the last-second loss the night before against Wayne County. Dyer Barnes scored 10 of the teams first 14 points to help Lewis County jump out in front of the Hawks 14-9 in the opening quarter.The Panthers continued to build on their lead in the second quarter behing 6 points from Hunter Smith to take a 32-15 lead in at the half. The Hawks would begin to turn the momentum late in the third qusrter and finishing even with the Panthers at 13-13 in the period and the score was 45-28 as the game moved into the final eight minutes, Hampshire would be able to cut the Panther lead to 5 points midway through the fourth quarter, but the Panthers would seal the game at the freethrow line and take a 61-47 win. Austin Shepherd, Steele Moseley, and Hunter Smith each had 11 points for the Panthers, Dyer Barnes added 8, Wyatt Bosheers 6, Kyle Holcomb 4, Luke Lawson and Caden Anderson 3 each, and Malachi Bruce and Cade Lomax 2 points each.

LCHS vs. Hickman County

The Lewis County Lady Panther and Panthers played their third games of the week as they travelled to Centerville to take on the Hickman County Lady Bulldogs and Bulldogs on Friday, December 3rd.

In the first game of the evening, the Lady Bulldogs jumped on the Lady Panthers early, holding Lewis County scoreless in the opening quarter and taking a 15-0 lead at the end of the first. The Lady Panthers would get on the board in the second, breaking the long scoring drought, but the Lady Bulldogs would continue to build their lead as the game went into the half with Hickman County leading by a score of 26-3. The Lady Panthers would have their best offensive period of the night in the third quarter, scoring 7 in the period, but the Lady Bulldogs continued to pull away and held a 45-10 lead as the game moved into the fourth quarter. With a running clock in the fourth, the Lady Bulldogs cruised to a 49-13 win over Lewis County. Mya Siever had 6 points for the Lady Panthers in the loss, Ruth Jennings and Serenity Warman each had 3, and Blayr Clayton had 1.

In the boys’ matchup it was the host Bulldogs that jumped out in front early, taking a 17 -8 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Panthers fought back early in the second but were unable to put a dent in the Hickman County lead as the Bulldogs held a 25-15 advantage at halftime. The third quarter was another closely played period as the teams matched baskets for eight minutes and Hickman County added to their lead, with the score standing 34-23 heading into the final quarter of regulation. In the fourth the Bulldogs were able to fend off any run the Panthers mounted, and the teams played an even 13-13 quarter, and Hickman County took a 47-36 victory. Dyer Barnes was the leading scorer for the Panthers with 19 points, Austin Shepherd added 9 points, and Rhett Middleton had 8 in the loss.

LCHS vs. Wayne County

The Lewis County High School Lady Panthers and Panthers faced off for with the Wayne County Lady Wildcats and Wildcats for the second time this season on Monday night, November 30th at Lewis County High School.

The rematch between the Lady Panthers and Lady Wildcats was the opening game of the evening. The Lady Wildcats pulled away early in the game, holding the Lady Panthers scoreless for the first eight minutes of play to build a 31-0 lead in the first quarter. The Lady Panthers would get on the scoreboard in the second quarter as Mya Siever scored 5 of the team’s first 9 points and the Lady Wildcats held a 44-9 halftime lead. The third quarter was another tough period for Lewis County as Wayne County held the Lady Panthers to a lone freethrow from Desirae Warman and took a 67-10 lead into the fourth quarter. With a running clock in the fourth, the Lady Wildcats rolled to a 75-17 win. Mya Siever led the Lady Panthers with 7 points, Serenity Warman had 4, Desirae Warman 3, Kerrigan Reeves 2, and Emily Bratcher 1 point in the loss.

The Panthers and Wildcats took the floor following the girls’ matchup, and Lewis County would jump in front early as Luke Lawson knocked down two first-quarter three-point shots and the Panthers took a 16-10 lead after eight minutes of play. The Panthers would keep the Wildcats playing catchup through the second quarter as the built a 27-17 lead at halftime. The Wildcats would begin to chip away at the ten-point Panther lead in the third quarter as the limited Lewis County to ten points in the period and the Panthers’ lead was cut to 37-30 heading into the fourth quarter. Wayne County would drop four three-pointers in the final eight minutes of action, but none bigger than the basket made with 2.5 seconds remaining on the clock. With time winding down, Lewis County held a 2-point lead with only seconds remaining, but the Wildcats fired a three-pointer up and knocked it down to take a 50-49 win at the buzzer. Dyer Barnes had 15 to lad Lewis County, Austin Shepherd 14, Luke Lawson 8, Hunter Smith 6, Kyle Holcomb 4, and Bryson Clayburn 2.

LCHS vs. East Hickman

The Lewis County Lady Panthers and Panthers hosted the East Hickman Lady Eagles and Eagles for basketball action on Monday, December 6th at LCHS.

The Lady Panthers and Lady Eagles took the floor for the first game of the evening. East Hickman entered the game with a 5-1 record while the Lady Panthers came in looking for their first win of the 2021-22 basketball season. It was the Lady Eagles that took control of the matchup early as they pulled out in front in the first quarter and led 17-4 at the end of the period. The second period saw the Lady Panthers continue to struggle to find offensive production, and the Lady Eagles continued to add to their already big lead and went into the half leading Lewis County by a score of 32-11. The pace of the third quarter slowed considerably after the break, as Lewis County was held to a lone basket from Blayr Clayton while the Lady Eagles further extended their lead to 30, moving into the final eight minutes of play with East Hickman leading 43-13. With a running clock midway through the fourth quarter, East Hickman cruised to a 58-18 victory. Lewis County was led in scoring by Blayr Clayton and Kerrigan Reeves who each had 4, Aerial Whitwell and Serenity Warman 3 each, and Kailee Thomas and Mya Siever each had 2.

The Panthers and Eagles hit the hardwood in the second game of the night. Both teams came into the game with 2-4 records. The Panthers were hot off the tip, led by Dyer Barnes who dropped 10 points in the opening quarter helping the Panthers take a 14-9 lead at the end of the opening period. The Panthers continued to attack the Eagles in the second quarter as Barnes and Hunter Smith combined for 13 and the Panthers went into the half leading the Eagles 31-15. Halftime proved to be just what the Eagles needed as they came out of the break and doubled their first half score in the third quarter, outscoring Lewis County 15-6 to cut the Panther lead to 7 at 37-30 as play moved into the fourth quarter. Momentum stayed with the visitors in the final eight minutes, as the teams exchanged the lead multiple times in the game’s final moments and East Hickman took the lead in the waning seconds of the game. Lewis County had one final opportunity to take the win, but a shot at the buzzer fell off target and East Hickman came away with a 49-48 win. Dyer Barnes had 19 points for the Panthers in the loss, Rhett Middleton and Hunter Smith each had 9, Cade Lomax had 5 points, Wyatt Bosheers 4, and Austin SHepherd 2.
