January 31, 1952
Cumberland Presbyterian Church held a dedication for the addition which had previously been built. Reverend C. A. Galloway preached the dedication service.
A child was seriously injured when he was struck by a car on North Oak Street.
Robin “Boob” Williams announced that the Snip, Snap, Bite Café and Bus Station would be under his management effective February 1.
Kenneth Sublett was stationed at Zokasuka, Japan while serving in the U. S. Navy. The newspaper ran an address where residents could send him mail.
The Hohenwald American Legion boys basketball team defeated Lobelville with a score of 50 to 48.
Mr. and Mrs. M. P. Brown announced the birth of their daughter, Shannon Elaine.
Funeral services were held for Grady Carothers, Sr., 60; and for Mara Hensley, 83.
“Feudin’ Rhythm,” starring Eddy Arnold, and “Law of the Panhandle,” starring Johnny Mack Brown were the Friday and Saturday double feature at the Strand Theatre.
February 01, 1962
The referendum election for the construction of a hospital passed with a majority vote by Lewis Countians. The final vote was 1742 for and 29 against.
The City of Hohenwald Natural Gas system hit a new monthly peak during January when the system delivered over 22 million cubic feet of natural gas to approximately 505 customers.
The Science Club at LCHS, who had been keeping a record of the background radiation level in this locality since the fall of 1961, reported that there was a slight rise in radiation count rises. A list of all count readings was published.
Curtis Dabbs was named “Knight of the Month” at a meeting of the Knights of Columbus Council 3537 of the Fort Campbell area.
Twenty-five ladies participated in the local Mothers March of Dimes, collecting a total of $274.26.
Funeral services were held for Irene Clayton, 41.
“Tarzan the Ape Man,” starring Denny Miller, and “Homicidal,” starring Glenn Corbett and Patricia Breslin, were the Friday and Saturday-night double feature shown at the Highlands Drive-In and the Saturday night feature shown at the Strand Theatre.
February 03, 1972
Dr. Harvey Anderson, Lewis County Medical Director, reported that the flu in Lewis County appeared to be subsiding and that although the local hospital was full to capacity, very few were flu patients.
J.M. Adcox was appointed to a three-year term on the National Tennessee Walking Horse Commission.
Norman Hinson assumed duties as the northern district ranger of the Natchez Trace Parkway, having transferred to this area from Tupelo, MS.
Airman John Powers graduated from U.S. Air Force technical training as a communications analysis specialist.
Clyde Clifton, weather observer at Meriwether Lewis National Park, reported for the month of January that the temperature reached a high of 78 on January 24, 1972 and the lowest temperature occurred on January 13 with a frigid minus five degrees.
Albert Ricketts completed his enlistment in the U. S. Army and received a discharge.
Mr. and Mrs. Mack Talley announced the birth of their daughter, Alicia Renee.
Funeral services were held for Johnny Cotham, 57; W. Everett Gresham; Alfred Poore, 69;
“Joe,” starring Peter Boyle and Dennis Patrick, and “Plaza Suite,” starring Walter Matthau, Maureen Stapleton, Barbara Harris, and Lee Grant, were the Friday and Saturday night double feature at the Highlands Drive-In.
February 04, 1982
City Mayor Philip Griner signed a proclamation declaring the week of February 7-13 as National F.H.A. (Future Home Makers of America) /Hero Week.
The City of Hohenwald purchased a new pumper truck for use by the Volunteer Fire Department for the cost of $90,076.
Lynn Townsend was named Chair of the American Heart Association’s 1982 fund raising campaign in Lewis County.
Morrell Lee announced his resignation as pastor of the First Baptist Church in order to accept a position in McMinnville.
The Lady Panthers defeated Clifton with a score of 52 to 38. Kenda Lawson led the team in scoring with 12 points and 14 rebounds. They also defeated McEwen with a score of 44 to 41. Melinda Murphy was the top scorer for the team with 12 points and 11 rebounds. The Lady Panthers extended their winning streak with a 50 to 34 win over Waynesboro. The leading scorer was Kathy Dye with 19 points.
Mr. and Mrs. David McPherson announced the birth of their son, Jonathan David.
Funeral services were held for Paul Jones, 75.
January 30, 1992
The Board of Education commended the Hohenwald Volunteer Fire Department with an A+ Citizenship Award for their fast and effective response to a fire at the LCES campus on January 8.
LCHS band members Kelly Murray and Amy Tatum participated as members of the Vanderbilt University “Pep” Band for a basketball game between Vanderbilt and Mississippi State.
Local resident Ronnie Scaife co-wrote a song with Marty Stuart which reached the number one slot in Radio and Records, a trade magazine. The song was titled “The Whiskey Ain’t Working” and was recorded by Travis Tritt. The video by the same name also held the position of the number one video on Country Music Television.
Shirley James was featured in the Teacher Feature column.
Richie Carroll enlisted in the U. S. Navy.
Crystal Potts won the Cutest Kid in the USA contest on the state and national level.
The LCHS Panthers defeated Loretto with a score of 74 to 71. Lee Burklow led the team in scoring with 35 points.
Mr. and Mrs. John Hensley announced the birth of their daughter, Jessica Michelle.
Funeral services were held for Floyd Bridger, 69; Gary Freeman, 30; Henry Smale, 88; Chan Pak, 67; and for Lola Wilson, 67.

Torrential rainfall the previous week caused extensive flood damage to many roads and bridges in Lewis County. Local schools closed for two days and many people were unable to get to their homes. The newspaper also reported that a few residents were left without a home as a result of the flooding.
In area news: The Summertown Utility District asked the state to hold off on a decision concerning a request to withdraw one million gallons of water per day from the Buffalo River.
The Lady Panthers defeated Hickman County with a score of 63 to 60. Britni Tenison led the team in scoring with 26 points. The Panthers were also victorious against Hickman County with a score of 45 to 29. Jon Lavett was the top scorer for the team with 13 points.
Heinz Autenried successfully climbed Mt. Kilamanjaro, reaching the top of the 19,321-foot volcanic mountain in northern Tanzania, Africa on Christmas Day 2001.
The following births were announced: Allison Bailey, daughter of Billy and Kim Jackson; Christopher Matthew, son of Jason and Rachel Coats; and Tatum Dayle, daughter of Scott and Vicky Hudson.
Funeral services were held for Margaret Hinson, 63; and for Trayton Isbell, infant.
