Serving Hohenwald, Lewis County Tennessee Since 1898
Week by week, month by month and year by year Hohenwald's times are a changing as the old folk song used to say.
This week's changes certainly started the town asking questions, in fact if I was asked what is happening to the row of shops on West Main Street at the junction of Hwy. 48, I must have been asked twenty times.
The answer to that question was, I wasn't quite sure. I saw as others did that major renovations were taking place at the two old Lanny Brewer Carpet Shops, sadly vacant after the death of Lanny Brewer. But apart from that I wasn't sure, except for the endless gossip that included them pulling the whole place down.
Well, not quite true, so when I heard that Duke Turnbow had purchased the old carpet store, and then more gossip that he had also purchased Larry's old Barber Shop at the end of the block, together with the store that he also owned next door that had the computer graphics in it, I started to question was Duke buying up the whole row of shops.
And so the truth comes out. Yes, Duke had purchased the two old Brewer Carpet Shops, and a sale was also pending for the purchase of Larry Webb's two properties. Now this would be a major loss for the town as that old Barber Shop had been there for many years. And if you wanted to find someone in the morning, just check on Larry's first of all, because they were probably there with a bunch more of the Hohenwald men folk.
So the next stop was to Larry's and sure enough a sale was pending to Duke Turnbow for the two buildings. So would the Barber Shop eventually close? "Probably a yes to that question" said Larry, but it will certainly be open for a few more months yet, so I have a while to say goodbye to everyone. But it will be a sad time for all, and I will be sorry to close the doors, as it was such a large part of the community.
As for the old City Cafe, well that is in negotiations, and offers are still being made, but a price has yet to be determined.
