February 21, 1952

The Church of Christ was offering a free, ten-day singing school from February 20 to 29th. The class was taught by Professor Tommy Nicks of Nashville.

Reverend Paul Groshans announced that a revival meeting would be held in the Scott Old Produce House on North Maple beginning on February 15, 1952.

The following news items were reported for residents serving in the United States Armed Forces: Joe Talley graduated from the U.S. Naval Training Center in Great Lakes, Il. Charles Sims was home from Korea and visiting family on a 30-day furlough before reporting to Ft. Knox, KY. Leon Willis was now stationed in Yokohoma, Japan. Joe Pollock was home on a 30-day furlough before departing for the Far East.

Funeral services were held for Mary Coop; and for Dol Grimes.

The Strand Theatre advertised a Mad Marquis “fun and fright” stage show to be held at midnight on April 1, 1952 at the Strand Theatre. A “spooker doper” film was also to be shown in combination with the event. The Strand also announced that a “1952 Child of the Year” contest would be held at the theatre February 23-26. The grand prize was a Hollywood screen test, first prize was $10.

“You Never Can Tell,” starring Dick Powell and Peggy Dow, and “The Great Plane Robbery,” starring Tom Conway and Margaret Hamilton, were the Friday and Saturday night films showing at the Strand Theatre.

February 22, 1962

The Herald reported that Herb Hawks would build and operate a bowling alley in Hohenwald to be known as “Ginger Lanes.”

The Hohenwald Rotary Club announced their sponsorship of an all-night singing to be held on March 2 at the LCHS auditorium. The event would be held to raise funds for the annual Heart Fund.

Boyd Humphreys caught two large-mouth bass at Napier Lake while using homemade lures.

Mr. and Mrs. Robert Epley celebrated their 50th anniversary with a reception held at the Oak Grove Community Building.

Vanessa, Sadona, Sherry and Jace Spears were host and hostesses at a Valentine Twist party at the home of their parents Mr. and Mrs. Richard Spears, Jr.

The Gordonsburg 4-H Club was named the Outstanding 4-H Club in Lewis County for 1961. Dennis Davidson accepted a trophy on behalf of the group by Home Agent Mary Smith.

Funeral services were held for Harvey Crook, 83; Alsie Dabbs, 71; and for Billy Sisco, 22.

“King of the Roaring ‘20s,” starring David Jassen and Anne Foster, and “Man from God’s Country,” starring George Montgomery, were the Friday and Saturday-night double feature shown at the Highlands Drive-In and the Saturday night feature shown at the Strand Theatre.

February 24, 1972

Hohenwald artists Mary and M. Scott Osterday held an art exhibition the Parthenon in Nashville on February 26 and 27. The husband and wife team had 51 different paintings in the art show.

The Herald reported that Brown’s Variety Store would open on February 25 in their “spacious, newly decorated store… across the street from his present location.” The Variety Store had been closed for a week to complete the move to the new location.

Jerry Jackson was promoted in the U. S Air Force to the rank of Airman 1st Class.

Bobby Walker was promoted in the U. S Air Force to the rank of Airman 1st Class.

Reverend Terrell Maynard was scheduled to be installed as pastor of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church on Sunday, February 27. Maynard was a native of Paducah, KY.

The LCHS girls basketball team defeated Linden with a score of 50 to 44. Diane Fite was the top scorer for the team with 25 points.

Mr. and Mrs. Terry Barnes announced the birth of their son, Adam Shane.

Ward Clayton was honored for his birthday with a party held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Johnston.

Funeral services were held for Burch Peery, 84; and for Bub Young, 76.

The City of Hohenwald advertised for “up-to-date news of your city government and current public affairs” to tune into the Mayor’s Report at 1:20 and PROBE at 1:30 Sunday afternoon on WMLR.

“Michael and Helga,” starring Ruth Gassman and Felix Franchy, and “The T.A.M.I. Show,” featuring the Beach Boys and Chuck Berry, were the Friday and Saturday night double feature at the Highlands Drive-In.

February 25, 1982

Lewis Farmers Co-op reported the theft of 420 steel posts, 9 rolls of fence wire and 56 cedar posts. The material was recovered on February 20 at the home of a Lawrence County resident following a high-speed chase in which thieves ran a police road block.

The Herald reported that South Central Bell was one of the largest taxpayers in Lewis County having paid $24,000 in taxes.

Shari Runions was named Valedictorian of the 1982 senior class of LCHS; Suzanne Higginbotham was named Salutatorian.

Tammie Runions joined the Navy Delay Enlistment Program (DEP).

The LCHS Lady Panthers won their first game of District 10A tournament play with a 42 to 25 triumph over Clifton. Kim Sublett was the top scorer for the team with 9 points.

Mr. and Mrs. Tim Whitwell announced the birth of their daughter, Jennifer Elise.

Mrs. Everette Hinson was honored for her birthday with a dinner at the home of her daughter, Barbara Hinson.

Bonnie Hinson was honored on her 81st birthday with a surprise drop-in party hosted by her children.

Funeral services were held for Robert Pace, 73; and for Milton Runions, 79.

“French Lieutenant’s Women” was the Friday, Saturday, and Sunday movie showing at the Highlands Drive-In Theatre.

February 20, 1992

A public hearing was held by the City of Hohenwald to discuss parking in the downtown area after a petition from local merchants and business people was presented.

Hart Industrial Products offered a Hose-Trac Management System demonstration of the mobile tank-truck and chemical-processing at Boston Industrial Products on February 13.

Janie Cogdill was crowned Queen and Bill Bates was chosen King during a fundraising event sponsored by the Lewis County Senior Citizens.

Deneen Daniel was featured in the weekly Teacher Feature column.

Scott Summers, Team Honda, took the overall win at the second annual Black Forest Hare Scramble held in Hohenwald.

The LCHS Panthers defeated Waynesboro with a score of 76 to 66 in overtime play. Lee Burklow led the team in scoring with 29 points.

Lloyd and Alicia Sherman announced the birth of their son, Caleb Cassidy.

February 21, 2002

A meth lab was discovered while the Lewis County Sheriff’s Department was serving an arrest warrant at a Hidden Valley residence.

Cody Bates was promoted to Eagle Scout at a Court of Honor held by the Boy Scouts Troop 322.

Rick Baur was presented the Long Rifle Award by the Boy Scouts of America.

Lewis County Volunteer Fire Department aided the Hickman County Fire Department with a fire in the Aetna community.

Katie Edwards and Ashley Tiller was named as American Legion Auxiliary Volunteer State delegates. Ashley Bosheers and Erica Jackson were selected as alternates.

The LCHS Panthers defeated Summertown with a score of 73 to 56. Adam was the top scorer for the team with 19 points.

Mike and Shawna Hall announced the birth of their daughter, Shaelyn Renee.

Funeral services were held for Talford Anthony, 82; Bonnie Gray, 67; Jacob Hamilton, 80; an dfor Burton Kirk, 80.
