March 13, 1952

Otis Holley earned a sales award from Investors Diversified Services, Inc.

Ward Clayton enlisted in the Marine Corps and was stationed at Parris Island, SC.

The following births were announced: Sherry Elaine, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Claude Quillen; and James Thomas, son of Mr. and Mrs. L. P. Aydelotte.

Mr. and Mrs. W. N. Bastin celebrated their 54th anniversary with a reception hosted by their children.

Funeral services were held for Mrs. Percy Lyell, 63; Bessie Rich, 56; Mrs. J. T. Rich; and for Nellie Wix, 21.

Kittrell Motor Company advertised a sale on Frigidaire refrigerators that included a $50 trade-in for customers wishing to upgrade older fridges. With the trade-in credit, a 8.1 cubic feet fridge cost $237 and a 9 feet DeLux fridge cost $295.75.

“Alibaba and the Forty Thieves,” starring Maria Montez and Jon Hall, and “Beyond the Pecos,” starring Rod Cameron and Eddie Drew, were the Friday and Saturday double feature at the Strand Theatre.

March 15, 1962

The first women to join the Lewis County Composite Squadron Civil Air Patrol were given promotions. Receiving Warrant Officer bars were Emogene Dyer, Marjorie Graves, and Peggy Wayland.

Jerry Crowell was named head of the lab for Lewis County Hospital when it opened.

Dr. Bobby Smith began his practice in Hohenwald at the Boyce Clinic in association with Dr. Edgar Akin and Dr. Don Gaines. The three doctors purchased the Clinic from Dr. David Rutledge and would practice at the facility until the new hospital was completed.

Funeral services were held for Horace Brown, 69; James Coffee, 37; and for Byron Murphree, 59.

“Loss of Innocence,” starring Danielle Darrieux and Kenneth More, and “Serengeti” were the Friday and Saturday double feature at the Highlands Drive-In.

Advertised specials this week at Seaton’s Bi-Rite included a pound of Colonial coffee for $0.59, a pound of oleo for $0.10, a dozen eggs for $0.39, a dozen lemons for $0.39, and fresh lean ground beef for the price of $0.39 a pound.

March 16, 1972

Brown’s Variety moved to a new location at 18 East Main Street and announced a Grand Opening would be held. The variety store had previously been located across the street.

Hohenwald Tire Company moved to a new location at 253 Park Avenue North. The business had previously been located at 113 Park Avenue North.

A total of $1,297 was collected during the Cerebral Palsy drive held over the weekend.

Contributions from the 1972 Heart Fund Campaign in Lewis County total $2,435.91.

Harold Smith was discharged from the U. S. Army. The newspaper reported that decorations and citations Smith was awarded while serving in Vietnam included a Presidential Citation with oak leaf cluster, Combat Infantry Badge, Air-Com, two Bronze Stars, Vietnam Congressional medal service plaque for outstanding service in Vietnam and a death-defying 72 kills, and a Certificate of Achievement from both President Nixon and General Westmoreland.

Airman Robert Johnston graduated from a sixteen week course in weapons mechanics and would leave March 30 for duty with the 354th Tactical Fighter Wing Air Command at Myrtle Beach, SC.

Nancy Hamilton won the district championship in the 4-H Tennessee History Bowl held at Montgomery Bell State Park.

The following births were announced: Brian Keith, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Halbrooks; Randal Ray, son of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Simmons.

Funeral services were held for Nola Love, 57; and for Lula Shelby, 76.

“Who Slew Auntie Roo?,” starring Shelly Winters and Mark Lester, and “Follow That Dream,” starring Elvis Presley were the Friday and Saturday double feature at the Highlands Drive-In.

March 18, 1982

City Mayor Philip Griner signed a proclamation declaring March 27 as Health Fair Day in Hohenwald.

The Hohenwald City Council voted to annex property on Linden Highway which contained LCHS and to purchase the property known as Meriwether Lewis Hotel on the corner of East Main and Maple Street.

Howard DePriest was recognized for 25 years’ service at the Columbia Gulf Transmission Company compressor station in Hampshire.

The following births were announced: Britni Jade, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Larry Woodwall; Rebecca Diane, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Thomas; and for Jerry Ray, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ricky DePriest.

Funeral services were held for Jan Loveless; and for Don Tharp, 61.

“Venom” and “Night School” were the weekend double feature at the Highlands Drive-In.

March 12, 1992

The Wheel Tax Referendum was voted down by 164 votes. There were 957 no votes and 793 yes votes. If this tax had passed, residents would have had a $15 increase in wheel tax to cover the construction of a new Lewis County jail.

Genesco-owned Laredo Western Boots and Code West Footwear opened a second facility at 200 Dabbs Street. The new facility would bring 100 new jobs to Lewis County.

A Light and Color exhibit from Cumberland Science Museum was scheduled to open on March 18 at the Lewis County Museum.

Greg Barker was named the new TWRA officer in Lewis County. Barker replaced Terry Cherry who retired in August 1991.

Vandals struck LCMS, LCHS and Perry County High School, taking money and causing damage at all three locations.

Kenneth Craig retired from MLEC after 42 years of service.

Eliese Skelton was recognized for 35 years of service with the Lewis County Department of Human Services.

Nannie Nichols was honored for her 96th birthday with a dinner at the home of Mrs. B. H. Loveless in Texas.

Nannie Bunch was honored for her 100th birthday with celebrations at the Lewis County Senior Citizens building and at the Flatrock community building, along with being presented a certificate of recognition from Mayor Guy Nicholson, County Executive Terry Bunch, and Representative Calvin Moore.

Funeral services were held for Linda Sims, 46.

March 14, 2002

The Lewis County School Board voted down a full-day Kindergarten plan for the 2002-2003 school year. Various members went on record stating that they thought a full day was physically too difficult for children in Kindergarten.

A Kentucky man was arrested after a Sheriff deputy pulled him over for speeding and found evidence that drugs were involved.

James and Jean Zimmerman were spotlighted in the Wado-Ryu News for their many years of dedication to the sport of karate.

The LCHS Lady Panther softball team opened the season with a 1 to 0 win over Hickman County.

The following births were announced: Deven Wayne and Dallana Leanne, twin children of Tracy and Shonda Sager; Abigail Rylee, daughter of Robert and Regina Brewer; and Maleah Paige, daughter of Joshua and Angela Morey.

Funeral services were held for Barry Carroll, 18; Billie Hays, 67; Sallie Hensley, 92; J. C. Seiber, 87; Audie Staggs, 95; and for Janet Staggs, 53.
