May 08, 1952
For the first time in the history of the county, women jurors were used at the Chancery Court on May 05, 1952. Those who served as the first women jurors in the grand jury were Mrs. Lester Nelson, Mrs. Elihue Johnston, and Rachel Hurt. Serving on trial jury number 1 were Bertha Ashton, Hazel Bell, Bernice Brownlow, Bessie Finerty, Estelle Harwood, and Mrs. J.W. Poore.
R.K. Roney, Production Manager and Partner of Old Black Joe Company, urged growers to get their tomato plants in the field as soon as possible in order to produce a high yield.
Mr. and Mrs. Charles Bennett announced the birth of their son, Joe Richard.
Mr. and Mrs. Milt Hinson celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house at their home.
The following Lewis County men were inducted into the Armed Forces on May 05: James Bromely and James Mayberry.
Donnie Beatty won first place and E.B. Dyer won second place in the MLEC “What Electricity Has Done for My Community” essay contest.
First National Bank advertised that they would be sponsoring a contest, which would last four weeks. First prize was $3 cash and one year rent free S.F.B., second prize was $2 cash and one year rent free S.F.B., and third prize was $1 cash and one year rent free S.F.B.
“Mickey,” starring Lois Butler, and “Stagecoach Driver,” starring Whip Wilson and Fuzzy Knight, were the Friday and Saturday night films showing at the Strand Theatre.
In area-wide news, three Hickman County men faced moonshine charges after being arrested one week previously. The three men, who resided in Lyles, were estimated to put out 100 gallons of moonshine liquor a day. Also, May 14 was set as the date for the trial of Hickman County Sheriff Guill Mitchell who was charged of illegally disposing of 110 gallons of moonshine.

The Clean Up—Paint Up—Fix Up committee staged a parade on May 07.
The Lewis County Jaycees were scheduled to hold a ball at the Memorial Building on May 12.
Local merchants and business men joined together to sponsor the Miller Brothers Circus which was scheduled to be held at Memorial Park on May 14.
Ann Shannon was announced as the valedictorian of the LCHS Class of 1962. Betty Walton was announced as salutatorian.
Funeral services were held for Martha Hensley, 80; and for Edward Penrod, 57.
Chuck roast was $0.45 a pound and smoked jowl was $0.19 a pound at Seaton’s Bi-Rite. A dozen lemons cost $0.29 and cabbage was $0.08 a pound at Piggly Wiggly.
“Bachelor Flat,” starring Tuesday Weld and Richard Beymer, and “At Gunpoint,” starring Fred MacMurray and Dorothy Malone, were the Friday and Saturday-night double feature shown at the Highlands Drive-In and at the Strand Theatre.

County Judge A.B. Nicholson and Mayor Dol Willis signed a proclamation naming May 13, 1972 as “Fight Cancer Day.”
Ted Johnson, WSM announcer, was announced as emcee of the Lewis County Cancer Unit Talkathon which was scheduled to be held at the court house and broadcast on WMLR on May 13.
THP Troopers Paul Hedge and Wendell, along with Sheriff T.C. Carroll recovered 4,015 nickels and other change totaling $219.40 and 25 cartons of cigarettes that were stolen from the Quik Serv Station and Ada Brown’s Station.
Denise Sublett Hensley was named Valedictorian of the LCHS graduating class of 1972. Connie Duncan was named Salutatorian.
Jerry Seiber and Ronnie Wix attended the F.F.A. Convention in Nashville on May 4 and 5.
Mrs. C.W. Nestor was presented an engraved silver tray from Jerry Crowell, Lewis County Hospital Administrator, in appreciation of her work in reorganizing the Hospital Auxiliary and as serving as Director of Volunteers.
Mr. and Mrs. Council Stover announced the birth of their daughter, Tammy Lynn.
Funeral services were held for Guy Frazer, 66; and for Betha Gilbreath, 79.
J & P Furniture advertised several Mother’s Day specials including a 5-piece Corning ware set for $18.88 and an electric fry pan for $19.95.
“The Babysitter,” starring Patricia Wymer and George E. Cary; and “Wild Rovers,” starring William Holden and Ryan O’Neal, were the Friday and Saturday night movies showing at the Highlands Drive-In.

Daryl Blackstock was approved as an Eagle Scout by the Review Board on May 10.
Diann O’Guinn was appointed as Director of Nursing for the Centerville Health Care Center.
Hohenwald students of Doyce Carroll attended the USTA Twirling Contest in Hopkinsville, KY.
Rickey Glenn and Teresa Staggs announced the birth of their daughter, Tera Renee.
Funeral services were held for Jeff Daniel, 20; Annie Hardin, 81; Cecil Ulrich; Jessie Ulrich; and for Arthur Sanderson, 77.
“Missing,” starring Jack Lemon and Cissy Spacek, was the Friday, Saturday, and Sunday movie at the Highlands Drive-in Theatre.
May 14, 1992
The month of May 1992 was designated by Mailbox Improvement Month in Lewis County to call attention to the need for providing appropriate mail receptacles for the delivery of mail.
The Hohenwald Municipal Swimming Pool announced their grand opening on May 23.
The annual Hee Haw and Howdy Show was scheduled to be held on May 29, 30, and 31 at the LCMS auditorium. The event was sponsored by the Lewis County Chapter of the American Cancer Society.
Alice Landrum was featured in the weekly Teacher Feature column.
Justin Reeves caught a 10-pound, 3-ounce largemouth bass while fishing with Russ Adcox in Lewis County on May 09.
Mr. and Mrs. Randy Hickerson announced the birth of their son, Justin Randall.
Funeral services were held for Sebern Blackwell, 82; Vestal DeVore, 84; James Goodman, Sr., 73; Nancy Kirk; Leonard Mercer, 74; and for Viola Tripp, 78.

Hohenwald Mayor Guy Nicholson signed a proclamation designating May 2002 as Foster Care Month.
An estranged relationship resulted in the murder/suicide in Mt. Pleasant that claimed the life of a Lewis County resident.
Lewis County Relay For Life raised over $20,000 for the American Cancer Society.
Phyllis Lawson was named 2002 Teacher of the Year in Lewis County Elementary School.
John Carroll, a contested on the television show Survivor, was accepted into the Elephant Sanctuary’s internship program.
Herbert Bastin was honored for his 90th birthday with a dinner at Brooksie’s Barn Restaurant in Jackson.
Funeral services were held for Lloyd Curtis, 63; Anne Lee Hajdusek, 89; Robenia Joyce, 97; Willie Seiber, 66; and for Albert Wise, 79.
