Lewis County was recently recognized by the founder and President of Dixie Softball, Obie Evans, for thirty years of being franchised with the national girls’ softball organization.

Local resident, Jennifer McDonald, who also sits on the Dixie Softball National Board of Directors, said she remembered when girls’ softball was first introduced to our community, back in 1992.

“Coach Eugene Grinder and Ms. Cherry Beckett were instrumental in bringing Dixie Softball to Lewis County. Until 1992 boys’ baseball was the only organized sport played at Memorial Park, but Coach Grinder and Ms. Beckett changed that, and gave girls the opportunity to play organized ball as well,” said Mrs. McDonald.

The Lewis County Dixie Youth Board of Directors recently met with Mrs. McDonald at the Park, where she presented them with an official 30 year “Certificate of Franchise” from Dixie Softball, which was signed by President Evans.
