June 19, 1952

Due to numerous complaints from city residents, the Mayor and City Council ordered city law enforcement to crack down on all traffic violators. Joe Fite, City Marshal, asked the public to “take notice” because all traffic violators would “be punished to the fullest extent of the law.”

The Hohenwald American Legion ball team defeated Henderson by a score of 11 to 10.

Ray C. Brewer was serving aboard the USS Oriskany.

Funeral services were held for Emma Edwards, 62.

“Savage Drums,” starring Sabu, and “Hot Lead,” starring Tim Holt and Richard Martin, were the Friday and Saturday night movies showing at the Strand Theatre.

June 21, 1962

The Columbia office of the Social Security Administration reported that $30,838 was paid monthly in social security benefits to Lewis Countians.

Jan Rowe was chosen as editor for school newspaper at George Peabody College for Teachers.

The Jaycees announced that they would hold a dance at the Memorial Building on June 29.

The Lewis County Composite Squadron, Civil Air Patrol, participated in a Group II training search and rescue program at the Centerville airport.

Larry Jones, U.S.A.F., was promoted to airman second class.

Funeral services were held for Mack Sanford, 52.

“The Deadly Companions,” starring Maureen O’Hara and Brian Keith, and “The Kettles in the Ozarks,” starring Marjorie Main and Arthur Hunnicut, were the Friday and Saturday-night double feature shown at the Highlands Drive-In and at the Strand Theatre.

June 22, 1972

A $647,128 low rent public housing contract to the Hohenwald Housing Authority was approved by the Department of Housing and Urban Development. Forty houses, twenty of which were designed for the elderly, were contracted to be built in Hohenwald.

The Bible Quiz Team from First Pentecostal Church won the State Bible Quiz Tournament for the third consecutive year. The tournament was held June 2 and 3 at Perryville.

Harold Sublett attended a seminar on negative retouching sponsored by the Eastman Kodak Company in Atlanta, GA.

James Threet graduated from Marine Corps basic training in San Diego.

Mr. and Mrs. William Dunn were scheduled to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on June 25, with an open house given by their children.

Emma Spann was honored on her 91st birthday with a basket lunch at Memorial Park.

Funeral services were held for Andrew Broadway, 67; and for Herbert Duncan, 52.

“Who Killed Mary What’s-Rename,” starring Red Buttons and Sylvia Miles, and “Outback,” starring Donald Pleasence and Gary Bond, were the Friday and Saturday night movies showing at the Highlands Drive-In.

June 24, 1982

A ground breaking ceremony beginning construction and remodeling of the Hohenwald Bank and Trust main branch facility was held.

Kimberly Hiscox was appointed to the U.S. Air Force Academy.

Chris Cantrell won the 25th Anniversary Tournament at the Hohenwald Recreation and Golf Club.

Mary Garrett won 1200 square feet of attic insulation, Insul-Safe II, given away by Lewis County Insulation.

Hohenwald Future Farmers of America attended the leadership camp at Camp Clements on the Caney Fork River in Van Buren County.

Mr. and Mrs. R.D. Hensley celebrated their 42nd anniversary with a dinner at the home of their daughter.

Funeral services were held for Mrs. Jessie Bruner, 78; Kate Gray, 81; Roger Reynolds, 19; and for William Simmons, 53.

“Some Kind of Hero,” starring Richard Pryor, and “Gas,” starring Susan Anspach and Howie Mandel, were the Friday, Saturday, and Sunday movies showing at the Highlands Drive-in Theatre.

June 25, 1992

Herbert Zien, Hohenwald Resource Recovery, signed the contract finalizing the purchase of the Hohenwald Biomass Steam Plant.

Carl Tatum and James Haley retired from service on the Lewis County Public Library Board after a combined 63 years of service. Tatum served for 36 years, having first been appointed to the board in in 1956. Haley served for 27 years having been appointed to the board in 1965.

Tosha Baxter placed first alternate and won a trophy for prettiest hair in a Town and Country Beauty pageant.

John Spears and Jimmy Brackeen won the 5th Lewis County Bass Anglers tournament held at Waterloo, AL. Their fish weighed 9.22 pounds.

Funeral services were held for Willie Banks, 83; and for Maxine Drake, 78.
