Glimpses of Hohenwald's Past

July 24, 1952

A new heat record was set in Lewis County. Fred Roush, Superintendent at Meriwether Lewis National Park, reported that a high temperature of 105 was set on Tuesday, July 22.

Attorney Thomas Fox who was running unopposed for State Senate for Lewis, Perry, and Maury Counties in the Democratic primary received orders from the Marine Corps to report for recalled duty at Camp Lejune, NC as a legal officer for a minimum of two years active duty.

The “Old Folks” (Jerry Fite, Boyd Humphreys, Ellis Poore, and others) were scheduled to play against the American Legion ball team in an exhibition game at Memorial Park on June 24.

Arthur Turnbow completed processing from active military duty at Fort Jackson, SC.

Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Armstrong, and Mr. and Mrs. Jimmie Hume and family went deep see fishing aboard the Marvella off the coast of Daytona Beach, FL. They caught ten king mackerel and four bonitas.

Funeral services were held for Jessie Brown, 20; and for Clem Pace, 57.

“Rocky Mountain” starring Errol Flynn and Patrice Wymore; and “Navy Bound” starring Tom Neal, Wendy Waldron and Patrice Wymore were the Friday and Saturday night movies showing at the Highlands Drive-In Theater.

“Man in the Saddle,” starring Randolph Scott, and “Oklahoma Justice,” starring Johnny Mack Brown and James Ellison, were the Friday and Saturday double feature shown at the Strand Theatre. “Red Stallion in the Rockies,” starring Arthur Franz, Jenn Heather, and Jim Davis; and “Dynamite,” starring Red Stallion, were the Sunday night double feature at the Highlands Drive-In.

July 26, 1962

Electric service in Hohenwald and all of Lewis County was interrupted on July 21, when a speeding vehicle left Hwy 100 (one half mile south of Centerville) and struck a TVA power pole, shearing the pole in two. The driver was carried to Nashville in critical condition.

Approximately 2,500 people attended the 4th Annual Lewis County Horse Show held on July 20.

A picnic supper was held at Memorial Park on July 17 to honor former residents of Hohenwald who were visiting here. Over 25 people attended the picnic.

Ten cars participated in the Slow Heat race at the Hohenwald Speedway with Ray Brown winning first place.

Gladys Shelton returned from a tour of the Carolinas, Virginia, and Washington, D.C.

Douglas Barber, U.S. Navy, completed basic training and was stationed at Moffet Field, CA.

Funeral services were held for William Staggs, 77.

“Night Creatures,” starring Peter Cushing; and “Home from the Hill,” starring Robert Mitchum and Eleanor Parker, were the Friday and Saturday-night double feature shown at the Highlands Drive-In and at the Strand Theatre.

July 27, 1972

A new 40-acre landfill site for the disposal of garbage was approved by the state Pollution Board. City also laid a new six-inch water main to the boundary of the west city limits to include Wheel City on Linden Hwy.

A recognition program for active Candy Stripers was scheduled to be held on July 29 at Hohenwald Recreation and Golf Club.

James Webb, Jr. was stationed with the 6922nd Security Group at Clark Air Base in the Philippines.

Mr. and Mrs. Claude Willis grew a 23 and a 25-pound cabbage in their garden.

O.D. McClearen grew a 15-inch cucumber in his garden.

Mr. and Mrs. Tommy Pickard announced the birth of their son, Barton Thomas.

Funeral services were held for Robert Brewer, 82; Lena Cooper, 70; and for Susan Spears, infant.

“Valley of the Dolls,” starring Barbara Parkins, Patty Duke, Paul Burke, and Susan Hayward; and “Frankenstein Created Woman,” starring Peter Cushing and Susan Denberg, were the Friday and Saturday night movies showing at the Highlands Drive-In.

July 29, 1982

David Adcox was named Community Development Volunteer of the Year by the South Eastern Community Development Association.

An organizational meeting to form a Friends of the Library group was scheduled to be held on August 3rd at Lewis County Public Library.

The following postal workers at the Hohenwald Post Office were presented with Safe Driver Awards, totaling 63 years of safe driving: Thomas Carroll, 10 years; James Garrison, 7 years; James Griner, 15 years; Robert Griner, 16 years; Leroy Staggs, 7 years; and Thomas Tiller, 8 years.

Boy Scout Daryl Blackstock was raised to the rank of Eagle Scout on July 20.

Frankie Floyd graduated from the F.B.I. Academy in Quantico, VA.

Dennis Skelton enlisted in the Navy Delayed Enlistment Program.

William Carl was awarded the Department of Defense Meritorious service medal.

J. R. Page grew a 2-pound and 2.5-pound tomato in his garden.

Mr. and Mrs. Ronnie Riley announced the birth of their daughter, Rhonda Ann.

Funeral services were held for Comber McNabb, 65.

“Blade Runner,” starring Harrison Ford; and “Rocky III,” starring Sylvester Stallone were the Friday, Saturday, and Sunday movies showing at the Highlands Drive-In Theatre.

July 30, 1992

Irene Rickets, retired educator, was honored at a reception held by the Board of Directors of Lewis County Senior Citizens on July 23, 1992. Ricketts was presented a certificate of appreciation and engraved plaque in recognition of not only her service to the community as a public school teacher, but also as a volunteer for many community and civic projects.

Two juveniles housed at American Counseling Systems were apprehended shortly after stealing the auto of a local resident who had left the keys in the ignition.

Police Chief C.R. Connor reported that bicycle theft was on the rise. Almost 20 cases of bicycle theft had been reported to the police within the last few weeks.

Joe Garner caught a 30-pound catfish while fishing on the Buffalo River with Darrin Garner, who also caught a 17-pound catfish.

Steve Johnson was stationed in Korea with the 5-17th Calvary Squadron of the 2nd Infantry Division.

The following births were announced: Holly Paige, daughter of Timothy and Joyce Ashworth; and Kathryn Taylor, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Chuck Campbell.

Mr. and Mrs. Hubert Milam celebrated their 50th anniversary with a reception held at the Hohenwald Church of Christ.

Funeral services were held for Jettie Depriest, 88; Alfred Hinson, 86; Glen James, 65; and for Lettie Ray, 86.

July 25, 2002

Randall Mitchell was elected and installed as the Seventh District Commander of the American Legion.

Lewis County Schools received a $75,000 grant to develop and implement an “Even Start Family Literacy” program within the county.

Vernalissa Walker placed in the top three at two different championship karaoke contests.

Nicholas Bradley caught a 2-pound small mouth bass while fishing with night crawlers on a Scooby Doo rod and reel.

Hardee’s of Hohenwald announced that it was switching from frying hamburgers and chicken sandwiches to a charbroiling technique on July 26.

Funeral services were held for Vickie Beshears; Evelyn Dickinson, 71; Max Herring, 72; Shelia McDonald, 43; and for Betty Maddox, 67.
