One Day at a Time

Series: One day at a time | Story 61

Well it is a nice morning here in our little valley, I am on the front porch swing and I have got my coffee and I am enjoying this early morning weather, it is not too hot right now, it is just a comfortable and quiet morning. The cats are also enjoying it, later up in the day when it gets hot they always go and find themselves a cool place and so do I.

I can not remember the weather being this hot and dry for this long, it seems we have had summer for a long time, but fall will soon be here and then winter, I guess when it is winter time I will start to complain about the cold of winter, oh well for right now I am just going to enjoy this morning. The birds are out early too, I do not see any squirrels but the apples that was on the old apple tree are gone and all the squirrels around here are all fat. We have got a ground hog that lives down at the creek, he is fast and does not like to be seen by anyone but I catch a glimpse of him when I take food scraps and peelings down to the compost pile, he is big and fat too, but I guess he has been eating the scraps, he used to try and get in the garden back when we had one, he doesn’t seem to be afraid of me when I go down there but I stay away from him.

Bob has been a little under the weather for the last week or so, but he is getting better, he has not been washing dishes and I really miss that but I think his vacation should be about over and it is time for him to get back to working in the kitchen. Thanks Dr. Kamal, Mike, Nikki and all the sweet people at our little hospital, you all are the best, but I think you all spoil him a little too much, you all sure take good care of us and we love you all.

My canning has slowed down, I did not do as much as I planned to do but recently I put up some good homemade vegetable soup for those cold winter days ahead of us, it is hard to think about winter in the summertime when the temperature is almost 100 degrees but wintertime is coming. The creek here behind our house has run dry again, we have been putting out water for the animals, when it is dry you know it has to be hard for them to find water.

I guess most of the gardens are about gone, but my daddy used to always plant a big patch of turnip greens at the end of summer, now wouldn’t some good turnip greens be good with a big pot of beans and a pan of good brown cornbread don’t you all think so?

The gas prices are looking a little better for now and maybe soon the grocery prices will go down some too, it seems times can get rough and then they get better and you know I was thinking after a storm there is usually a rainbow and that is Gods promise to us that He will always take care of us.

I am not going to worry about tomorrow and I am going to take one day at a time because God still has it all under control and He is the light at the end of the tunnel.

God bless,

Evelyn “E.T.” Trevathan
