Serving Hohenwald, Lewis County Tennessee Since 1898
July 27, 1940 - July 25, 2022
Jerry Ammons, of Hohenwald, passed away on Monday, July 25, 2022, two days shy of his 82nd birthday. He was born in Hohenwald on July 27, 1940 to the late Carlos Don Ammons and Sarah (Lynch) Ammons.
In 1959, Mr. Ammons bought a small hometown grocery store on Swan Avenue. From that point forward, Ammons Shop-Rite Market would become famous for its custom-made meat and sandwiches. If asked today, the majority of Hohenwald would say, they made the best bologna sandwiches in the south. But it wasn't just bologna they were known for, they were also known for meats and cheeses that you couldn't find in an everyday grocery store, such as hoop cheese, head cheese, liver cheese, pickle loaf and rag bologna.
And who could forget the big cigar he was always seen with? In 2014, after 55 years in business, Ammons Market closed for good.
While not at work, he loved to attend Nascar races, and spend time at the river with his family in the summer. He also enjoyed classic cars and trading vehicles.
Jerry is survived by his wife, Alice Ammons; daughter, Lisa Ammons Chambers (Danny); grandson, Dylan Chambers (Grace); granddaughter, Allie Hopkins (Jacob); and soon to be great-grandson, Eli Chambers.
Funeral services were held Thursday, July 28, 2022, at the McDonald Funeral Home, Hohenwald. Burial followed in the Downey Cemetery.
Officiating the service were Jeff "Boo" Spears and Yogi Spears, with singing led by Greg Mullinicks. Serving as pallbearers were Lynn Ammons, Lee Riley, Steve Selby, Frankie Kelley, Jake White, Josh White, Ryan Johnston and Jason Grimes.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Lomax Church of Christ Food for Friends or Food for Families Program.
