November 27, 1952
Minnie Evans resigned as Clerk of the Lewis County Selective Service board effective December 31. Evans had served as Clerk since 1948. O.E. Marbet, local board chair, announced that applications were being accepted for a replacement.
R.K. Roney was named Chairman of the Lewis County Crusade for Freedom campaign. The campaign sought to raise funds for the support of Radio Free Europe and Radio Free Asia, privately owned networks which beamed factual material to countries behind the “Iron Curtain.”
D.T. Hardy was advanced in rate to fireman while serving aboard the USS Los Angeles.
The LCHS basketball team defeated Mt. Pleasant with a score of 68 to 46.
A 21-inch 1953 Crosley deluxe table model television in a “beautiful Mahogany wood cabinet” was on sale at Wallace Poore Appliance Company for $259.95. One pound of Kist Flavor crackers cost $0.21, and all flavors of Jello were on sale for two for $0.15 at U-Tote Em Super Market.
Funeral services were held for Zianna Davis, 67; and for Elise Sheets, 49.
“Duel Silver Creek,” starring Audie Murphy; and “Black Hills Ambush,” starring Allan Lane and Eddy Waller, were the Friday and Saturday double feature showing at the Strand Theatre.
November 29, 1962
Mayor W.C. Keeton signed a proclamation naming the week beginning December 1 as Civil Air Patrol Week.
The paper reported that “Christmas is in the air as local merchants decorate in preparation for the annual Christmas Parade.” The parade route would begin on Fourth Street, travel north up Park Avenue, turn onto Smith Street, turn onto North Court Street, travel to West Linden, then turn onto Oak Street where it would travel south, turn east on Main Street, and finally conclude at the Meriwether Lewis Hotel.
The following LCHS Panther football players were selected to play on the all-Tennessee Valley Conference football team: Cecil Baker, Keith Rodgers, G.W. Stevens, and Chuck Stowe.
W.L. Tuttle was elected president of the Lewis County Civic Club.
Hohenwald Methodist Church announced a sacred music concert would be held on December 2 on the new organ recently purchased by the church. Jerry Briggs, organist for the Brentwood First Baptist Church would perform.
Howard Hensley completed advanced individual infantry training at Ft. Gordon, GA.
A housewarming and Tupperware party was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. R. C. White.
The following births were announced: Cheryl Elizabeth, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Tommy Kelly; and Scot Fletcher, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Jackson.
Dollie Cox was honored for her birthday with a surprise supper hosted by her children.
Funeral services were held for Arthur Anderson, 44; Edna Campbell, 62; Mrs. Stanley Jones; and for Landon Skelton, 42.
“The Far Country,” starring James Stewart and Ruth Roman; and “Tales of Terror,” starring Vincent Price, were the Friday and Saturday double feature shown at both Highlands Drive-In and Strand Theatres.
November 30, 1972
The Lewis County Jaycees announced that a drill band and color guard from Columbia Military Academy would participate in the Christmas parade on December 7.
J.D. Staggs completed Army basic training at Ft. Jackson, SC.
The LCHS Panthers defeated Waynesboro with a score of 69 to 53. Randy Carroll was the top scorer with 20 points.
Braunschweiger was on sale at McClearen’s IGA for $0.55 a pound, and a package of three boxes of Cracker Jack cost $0.25. Chuck Roast was on sale at Piggly Wiggly for $0.69 a pound and sliced jowl bacon was on sale for $0.39 a pound.
Funeral services were held for Christine Pulley, 31; Clarence Reeves, 60; and for Patsy Turnbow, 17.
“The Godfather,” starring Marlon Brando was the Friday and Saturday movie showing at the Highlands Drive-In.
November 25, 1982
The Lewis County Commission elected Joe B. Turnbow to fill the vacancy in the Highway Commissioner position that was created by the unexpected death of Finley Brown.
Lewis County Civil Defense Auxiliary planned a road block for November 28 to benefit Muscular Dystrophy.
Robert Williams was promoted to Regional Forester for Willamette Industries.
The Hohenwald Community Chorus planned a “Scenes of Christmas” program, consisting of Christmas music and skits, for December 3 and 4 at the LCES auditorium.
Flatrock Church of Christ would hold a dedication service for their new auditorium.
An organizational meeting for establishing Freewill Baptist Church planned for December 1.
The LCHS Lady Panthers opened their season with a 62 to 43 victory over Waynesboro. Denise Goodman led the team in scoring with 13 points.
Betty Nutt had a recipe for “Dictation Drops” published in the 34th edition of “Desserts”, a series of Home Economic Teachers Cookbooks from Favorite Recipes Press.
The following births were announced: Jason Creamer, son of Frank and Sarah Hallman; and Lindsey Renae, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jeff Gibson.
Funeral services were held for Aulton Dabbs, 42; Minnie Pollock, 92; and for Lee Williams, 69.
Brendagale Bakery and Gift Shop advertised a Grand Opening on November 27.
“E.T.,” starring Henry Thomas and Drew Barrymore was showing at the Highlands Drive-in Theatre from Wednesday, November 24 to Thursday, November 28.
In area news: the Hohenwald Volunteer Fire Department was called to Linden to assist with extinguishing a fire that consumed a number of businesses in the Village Plaza Shopping Center. Firemen from Parsons, Decaturville, and Hickman County also assisted.
November 26, 1992
Mayor Guy Nicholson signed a proclamation naming November 15 -21 as American Education Week in Lewis County.
Kenneth Turnbow, Lewis County Clerk, placed an ad in the paper to notify residents that the Lewis County Board of Commissioners requested law enforcement to strictly enforce for Wheel Tax Law due to concerns that some residents were avoiding County Wheel Tax Stickers for cars and trucks.
Gene Durham was presented a watch in commemoration of his 40 years’ of service with Laredo/Code West-Genesco Shoes.
Darlene Pevahouse completed Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Orlando, FL.
Darlene Johns was featured in the Lewis County Schools “Staff Feature” column.
Bobby Crowell was named minister for Pineview Church of Christ.
The LCHS Lady Panthers defeated Mt. Pleasant with a score of 46 to 39. Nikki Loveless was the top scorer for the team with 14 points.
Harold and Ellie Ashworth announced the birth of their son, Tyler Doyle.
Funeral services were held for Tina Ashmore, 23; Edward McClain, 76; Hubert Milam, 69; Mary Moore, 57; Flora Page, 86; and John Talley, 82.
A resident advertised that the was asking for signatures on a petition to remove the sheriff from office.
Subway announced its grand opening with a “buy one footlong sub, get one free sale.” A regular six-inch sub cost $1.69.
November 28, 2002
The Tennessee Department of Education reported that the dropout rate for Lewis County Schools dropped below 10% for the first time.
Gary Wedlake of Wedlake Industries entered in to a lease/purchase agreement with the City of Hohenwald Industrial Board to locate a new manufacturing company here that would process polyvinyl chloride (PVC) compounds.
A resident was sentenced to 18 years in prison for attempted first degree murder and aggravated assault in a September 24th shooting of another resident and an attack on two other people.
“The True Meaning of Christmas” was announced as the theme of the 2002 Christmas Parade. The Grand Marshall would be Dick Booz, plant manager for the local Eaton/Global Hose Plant.
Tim Webb was elected as chair of the 27-school system Middle Tennessee Superintendent Council.
The LCHS Lady Panthers defeated Wayne County with a score of 54 to 53. Britni Tennison was the top scorer for the team with 18 points and 8 rebounds.
The LCHS Panthers defeated Chester County with a score of 64 to 50. Jon Lavett was the top scorer with 22 points and 9 rebounds.
