Serving Hohenwald, Lewis County Tennessee Since 1898
by a Historical Society member
The Lewis County Historical Society is having a meeting to share experiences of going to school in the county. Did you attend Garrett, Gordonsburg, Sweetwater, Rosenwald, Slippery, or other rural schools? Or go to town? We would like to hear about what it was like to go to school back in the “good ol days.”
Did you have a favorite teacher that was special? Was there discipline? What kind? What did you have for lunch? Did you walk to school or ride a bus? Did you take music lessons?
Was there a bell that told you you were tardy? Did you ever have to miss school because there was work to do at home, or money was scarce?
Did you love going or hate? What did you wear? Was there an outhouse? Wood stove? A blackboard to clean? Were there any special days? School events? Plays or concerts?
How many were in your class? Do you keep up with any? Did you have to leave early or did you graduate? Do you remember any textbooks? Remember Dick and Jane?
What did you do at recess? Any fights or jealousies or enemies? Was there playground equipment like swings? Did you play baseball or some other fun activity like jump rope or hop scotch or jacks or dodgeball?
Come laugh and cry. Share and relive those times with old and new friends and let us know how school affected your life. Stir up some memories and share the good times and the hard ones too. Bring pictures to show of friends, teachers, the building. Some may still be standing.
The old Rosenwald School has recently been restored and is now in the Lewis County Senior Citizens Center on Main Street. This is where the meeting will be held Monday, March 6, 2023 at 6:00 p.m. Bring a friend. All are welcome and we especially invite new community members.
