July 9, 1953

Mrs. Blue Carroll was cooking breakfast when she opened the utensil drawer of her electric range to find an 18-inch copperhead coiled among the pots and pans. The Herald added, “Snakes, snakes, snakes is just about the topic of the day hereabouts… Ladies, you had better keep a keen eye while in the kitchen-- you, too, may be hording some reptile.”

According to the Selective Service Board there were 110 Lewis County residents in active military service.

Noel Akers purchased the Snip, Snap, Bite from Bob Jones.

John Davis was stationed at Francis F. Warren, Air Force Base, WY.

Army Private Ollie Spears joined the 25th Infantry Division in Korea.

“Montana Belle,” starring Jane Russell and George Brent, and “Once a Thief,” starring the Lon Chaney, Jr. and June Havoc, were the Friday and Saturday movies showing at the Strand Theatre.

“Fargo,” starring Wild Bill Elliott and Phyllis Coats, and “Revenge of the Zombies,” starring John Carradine and Gale Storm, were the Friday movies showing at the Highlands Drive-in Theater.

July 11, 1963

The Herald reported that vacant town lots seemed to be a major problem in Hohenwald due to their appearance.

Three teenage boys were found guilty of grand larceny, having stolen a 1962 Chevrolet belonging to Hubert Milan.

Mr. and Mrs. Bob Harwood’s lawn was named “Yard of the Week” by the Clean Up, Paint Up, Fix Up Committee.

Mack Holland was promoted to assistant Terminal Manager and Sales Representative of Mid-South Transport Company at Nashville.

Boyd Humphreys caught a seven-pound largemouth bass while fishing at Brown’s Lake near Lexington, TN.

Funeral services were held for Grady Whitwell, 67.

“The Kettles on Old MacDonald’s Farm,” starring Marjorie Main and Parker Fennelly, and “Taras Bulba,” starring Tony Curtis and Yul Brynner, were the Friday and Saturday movies showing at the Highlands Drive-In and Strand Theatre.

July 12, 1973

The main headlines for the week were “Annual Horse Show Thursday Night” and “Oak Grove Fish Fry Friday.”

A late afternoon thunderstorm on July 10th dropped a near record of four inches rain on the area in about an hour and fifteen minutes. Several businesses and homes reported having water running in one door and out the other.

Elsie Prince, USDA-ASC County Executive Director, retired after 34 years of service.

Mr. and Mrs. James Miller announced the birth of their son, Christopher Douglas.

Funeral services were held for Lester Alexander, 71; and for Olen Hinson, 66.

Advertised specials this week included an 18-ounce box of Kellogg’s Corn Flakes for $0.39 at Piggly Wiggly, a quart of Kraft mayonnaise for $0.69 at Baxter’s Bestway, and a quart of Kraft Miracle Whip salad dressing for $0.49 at IGA.

“Hell’s Bloody Devils,” starring John Gabriel and Ann Rondell, and “Satan’s Sadists,” starring Russ Tamblyn and Scott Brady, were the weekend movies shown at the Highlands Drive-In.

July 14, 1983

S. David Freeman, T.V.A. Board of Directors, and other T.V.A. representatives visited Hohenwald for a “listening session” with residents. The construction of a steam plant was proposed to residents. Waste products could be burnt to generate steam which could be sold to local industry with any access being sold to T.V.A.

A ribbon cutting was held to officially open Lewis County Community Credit Union on June 25.

Lewis County Flyers, a pigeon flyers club, announced a race schedule for upcoming young bird races.

SSgt and Mrs. Richard Mayberry and sons were honored with a dinner in celebration of their return from Germany.

The following births were announced: Kevin Lane and Amanda Rae, twins of Mr. and Mrs. Kevin Baker; Brandy Nichol, daughter of Jay and Lisa Curry; Kiplan Ray, son of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Kelsey; Jeffrey Michael; son of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Poore; Andrew William, son of Bryant and Theresa Rogers; Katlin MaRhea, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Seaton; and Amber Renee, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Zimmerman.

Esther Adcox was honored on her 89th birthday with a family dinner at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Burklow.

Funeral services were held for William Roden, 63.

“Porky II,” starring Dan Monahan and Wyatt Knight, was the weekend movie showing at the Highlands Drive-in Theatre.

July 15, 1993

A standing-room-only crowd from Lewis and Perry Counties attended a July 8 meeting called by Commissioner Leon Hunter to inform the community about the proposed landfill site on the Lewis-Perry County line.

The Lewis County Sheriff’s Department confiscated 560 marijuana plants from an undisclosed location in southwest Lewis County.

Lincoln Dabbs participated in a Naval Academy Engineering and Science Summer Seminar held at Annapolis, MD.

A local chapter of the Tennessee Young Democrats was formed in Lewis County.

Wayne Carroll won first place in a race held at Jackson Dragway.

Jeremy Spiess enlisted in the United States Army.

Annie Nutt retired from the local h.i.s. plant after 37 years of service.

Mark and Tammie Demrest announced the birth of their daughter, Heather Chantel.

Funeral services were held for Maude Brown, 89; Walter Darden, 77; Glenn Grimes, 79; and for Joanne Peters, 54.

July 10, 2003

Water lines throughout the city were being replaced as part of the first phase of the Leakage Rehabilitation Project.

Hulon Dunn was elected the Tennessee Press Association Board of Directors.

County Court Clerk Sandra Clayton was featured in the “A Closer Look” column.

Eaton Corporation recognized the following employees with service awards: David Barber, 40 years; Steve Clayton, 35; Gary Whitehead, 35 years; Bill Skelton, 30 years; Ricky Akridge, 25 years; Linda Carroll, 25 years; Cliff Hyde, 20 years; and Walter Morris, 15 years.

Sidney Clark and his grandmother, Mattie Skelton, grew a cabbage in their garden that weighed 17 pounds.

The following births were announced: Morgan Elizabeth, daughter of Kyle and Melody Bailey; and Gabriela Marie, daughter of Gary and Pamela Reeves.

Funeral services were held for Hettie Grimes, 94; James Mathis, 82; Minnie Poag, 81; Faye Toney; and for Martha Watson, 77.
