August 13, 1953

The State Health Department approved the Hohenwald water system.

The following items were reported on residents serving in the Armed Forces: Billy Edwards and Doug Poag were enroute to San Diego, CA where they would be inducted into the United States Navy. W. C. Harris and Charles Adair III arrived at Fort Hood, TX for Army basic training. Billy Sharp completed Army basic training at Fort Lee, VA. J. C. Goodman was wounded in action and awarded the Purple Heart while defending a vital outpost against Chinese attack.

C.L. Griner, Jr., made $25 by suggesting to Genesco that the shoes which were welted all around be jointed on the outside instead of on the shank.

The following births were announced: Cathy Lee, child of Mr. and Mrs. Austin Talley; and Randell Paul, son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Hinson.

Funeral services were held for Lula Patton, 70; and for Thomas Tatum.

“Cow Country,” starring Edmond O’Brion and Helen Welscott, and “Silver Whip,” starring Rory Calhoun and Dale Robertson, were the Friday and Saturday night movies showing at the Strand Theatre.

August 15, 1963

Ernest Pollock was appointed chief of the Hohenwald Volunteer Fire Department to replace Claude Ricketts who resigned on August 6.

A fire in the early morning of August 12 destroyed the Strand Theatre. The loss was estimated at approximately $58,000 in building and equipment.

The lawns of Mr. and Mrs. Billy Ward Smith and Mrs. L. C. Whitaker were selected as Lawns of the Week by the Clean Up, Paint Up, Fix Up committee.

The Leverette and Reeves Sausage Company, located in the Old Swan Café, opened on August 15 with Ronald Reverette and Carlton Reeves as owners.

Fred Talley was undergoing basic training at the Naval Training Center, Great Lakes, IL.

John and Nancy Tucker announced the birth of their son, Mike Keaton.

Funeral services were held for Jacqueline Nuetzmann, 5.

“Tarzan’s Greatest Adventure,” starring Gordon Scott, and “King Kong Versus Godzilla,” starring Tadao Takashima, were the Friday and Saturday movies showing at the Highlands Drive-In Theatre.

August 16, 1973

The first shipment of 1,120 garments made by the new Kay Windsor plant in Hohenwald left the factory on August 09.

June Jackson of Columbia won the Ladies Invitational Golf Tournament at the Hohenwald Recreation and Golf Club.

Douglas Hensley and Cecil Hinson were brothers who were re-united at the home of Mrs. Rannie Berry, after a 45-year separation.

Mr. and Mrs. Sam Pace celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house at the Hohenwald Bank Community room.

Rodney Davis won $550 in the jackpot drawing held at Piggly Wiggly.

The following births were announced: Frankye Ann, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Svehlak; and Shelly Kathyrn, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Curtis.

Funeral services were held for Levi Baker, 83; and for Robert Jones, Jr., 55.

“The Big Bird Cage,” starring Pam Grier and Anita Ford, and “Charlie-One-Eye,” staring Richard Roundtree and Nigel Davenport, were the Friday through Monday movies shown at the Highlands Drive-In.

August 18, 1983

First Citizens Bank announced a renovation program for its downtown office that would include a remodel and expansion.

A tractor-trailer rig overturned in the curve of Hwy 48 and Cane Creek Road, spilling its load of plywood approximately 1,000 feet in all directors from the wreck. Traffic was blocked for about four hours while materials were cleaned up.

Mary Lee Hinson retired from the local Genesco plant after more than 37 years of service.

Airman Odes Newton completed basic training and special security police training and was stationed at Hahn, Germany.

Rhonda Harder was elected president of the Lewis County Ambulance Service Explorer Post 707.

Harold Ray was named Chief of Staff at Crestwood Hospital in Huntsville, AL.

The following births were announced: Chad Curry, son of Ricky and Lori Griner; Jacob Bradley, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Page; Jacob Stanton, son of Keith and Patricia Williams; and Luella Gracie, daughter of Samuel and Debbie Mercer.

Funeral services were held for Alice Bauer; Mary Bromley, 83; Jessie Gordon, 78; and for Roy Haddock, 53.

“Return of the Jedi,” starring Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher, was the weekend movie showing at the Highlands Drive-in Theatre.

August 19, 1993

Hal Ketchum was scheduled to perform at the South Central Area Fair on August 28. The fair also expanded to nine days in 1993, making it the only nine-day fair in the state that did not take place in a metropolitan city.

The Lewis County Commission were presented with report on the jail construction. The original estimate for the construction was $838,000, but after architect design fees were factor in, the new cost was estimated at $1.3 million.

The person convicted in the shooting of a former Lewis County resident was seeking a new trial. The murder had taken place in Linden.

Jean Swaw grew an eleven-pound Jumbo brand cantaloupe in her garden.

The following births were announced: Colby Miles, son of Mr. and Mrs. Chuck Campbell; and Christopher Dale, son of Johnny and Darlene Hinson.

Ethel Crowe was honored on her 85th birthday with a celebration at her home.

“Aunt” Violet Thompson was honored on her birthday with a party hosted by the Older Adult Fellowship of the Hohenwald United Methodist Church.

Funeral services were held for Alida Bailey, 83; and for Alice Opasik, 87.

The Genesco Workers Defense Fund ran a full page ad concerning a potential class action lawsuit against Genesco Corporation.

August 14, 2003

The main headline for the week was “Deadly Explosion: A Hard Lesson Learned.” A meth lab exploded in Pleasantville. Following a 911 call, Sheriff Dwayne Kilpatrick and other emergency units from Hickman, Lewis, and Perry Counties reported to the incident located in a residential garage on Hwy 100. A man was found inside the garage with severe burns along with a deceased female. The cause of the explosion was from an anhydrous ammonia tank that exploded.

Bob Johnston and the Assessor of Property office were featured in the “A Closer Look” column.

Tina the elephant traveled 3,000 miles from British Columbia to arrive safely in Hohenwald.

Wesley Duncan was named the new head coach at Whitthorne Middle School in Columbia, TN.

Larry Dabbs was elected chair-elect of the Tennessee Society of Chain Pharmacists, a society of the Tennessee Pharmacists Association.

The following Eaton employees were recognized with service awards: John Barber, 40 years; Keith Beasley, 15 years; Gail Brooks, 15 years; Kenneth Brown, 15 years; Ricky Daniel, 15 years; Terry O’Neal, 15 years; and Rickey Osborne, 15 years.

Funeral services were held for Martha Bunch, 91; Ray Carroll, 67; Robert Crowe, 57; Larry Freeman, 46; Vickie Harris, 41; Laurita Lacoax, 51; Delbert Mash, Jr., 20; and for Alfred Ray, 93. An obituary also ran for the former State Adjutant General Carl Wallace.
