visits Lewis County Transfer Station to “Follow the Trash”
The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee’s Sustainability Committee received a special tour of the Lewis County Transfer Station in an effort to “follow the trash” and shed light on the fate of waste materials deposited at our community landfill.
Started in 2018, the Sustainability Committee works to help guide our commitment to responsible stewardship of our resources, fostering environmental consciousness, and coordinating with the community around us. As part of our organization, the Sustainability Committee champions eco-friendly practices and serves to align our broader mission with the well-being of our neighbors and the world we share with elephants.
“Our intention as a committee is to help each other learn, grow, and find ways we can support a better understanding of the (sometimes overwhelming) world of sustainability,” says Katie Anest, The Sanctuary’s Education Coordinator and Committee member. “This trip has greatly increased our understanding of the life cycle of trash, and it especially highlighted how many different entities collaborate in order to provide waste management services to Lewis County.” The Sanctuary Staff were welcomed and given a tour by Solid Waste Director Josh Stutts and Mayor Jonah Keltner.
Committee members were particularly impressed with the cardboard recycling efforts made by the Transfer Station, especially the free collection points stationed around the town. This type of initiative provides a great way to make recycling cardboard, Plastics 1 & 2s, and clear milk jugs accessible to everyone without requiring a special trip to the Station.
“The Committee leaves the Transfer Station with gratitude and inspiration. We thank Mayor Keltner and Director Stutts for spending their time showing us around and answering our many questions. We learned so much!” says Katie.
