The Lewis County Middle School Panthers traveled to Centerville on Thursday, August 24, to face the Hickman County Bulldogs.
It was the host Bulldogs that took the early lead midway through the first quarter with an 8-yard touchdown run that put Hickman County up 6-0.
It wouldn’t take long for the Panthers to find the equalizer. On their next possession the Panthers struck fast with a 55-yard run by Gavin Coker into the end zone to tie the game 6-6 in the first.
Hickman County would retake the lead early in the second quarter on a big 48-yard run to go up 12-6, a score that would hold until the halftime break.
The second half would belong to the Panthers. Quarterback Brody Clayton would connect with Coker on a 31-yard touchdown pass and the Panthers would convert on a two-point pass to take a 14-12 lead.
Lewis County would add to their lead two minutes later as Clayton found Eli Chapin on a 28-yard touchdown pass to push the Panther lead to 22-12 as play moved to the fourth quarter.
Lewis County would cap the scoring in the fourth quarter as Coker sprung free and sprinted for a 67-yard touchdown run, his third TD of the evening, that gave the Panthers a 28-12 lead and they took the win on the road.
Gavin Coker paced the ground game for the Panthers, rushing for 152 yards on 10 carries with 2 touchdowns. Brody Clayton had 4 yards on 2 carries, and Garrett Reeves had a carry for no gain.
Brody Clayton was 4 for 10 passing for 79 yards and 2 touchdowns. Eli Chapin had 2 receptions for 44 yards and a touchdown, Gavin Coker 1 catch for 31 yards and a touchdown, and Anthony Garcia 1 catch for 4 yards.
The Panthers will host East Hickman Thursday, August 31, on A.B.Sisco Field at 6 p.m. This is also Homecoming night.
