Serving Hohenwald, Lewis County Tennessee Since 1898
Courthouse and Justice Center
Over 75 students from the Lewis County High School sophomore class recently toured the Lewis County Courthouse and Justice Center as part of the school system's new Workforce Development Program. This was the first scheduled visit of the 2023-2024 "Chamber Tours", which is a partnership between Lewis County Schools Director, Dr. Tracy McAbee, and the Hohenwald/Lewis County Chamber of Commerce Director, Debbie Landers.
The tours allow students to visit local businesses, industries and government agencies to learn more about how they operate, and help them prepare for the workforce. The county government tour was led by Lewis County COO, Houston Hamblin, and Lewis County Schools Workforce Development Specialist, Brandi Feichtinger. It was chaperoned by Lewis County Schools CTE Director, Trina Weaks; LCHS Assistant Principal, Jason Fite; LCHS Guidance Counselor, Brian Qualls; and LCHS English Teacher, Reagan Clayton.
County Mayor, Jonah Keltner, welcomed the students to the historic courthouse, and gave them a brief presentation on the history of the county, as well as the duties of his office. County Clerk, Sandra Clayton, and Register of Deeds, Cheryl Staggs, also spoke with the students about the roles their offices play in county government. After the presentation the students visited those three offices, as well as the offices of Trustee, Mike Webb, and Property Assessor Travis Hinson, where they had a meet and greet with both officials. Once the historic courthouse tour was over, students walked across the street to the Justice Center where they were greeted by Clerk & Master, Kaitlin Bates; and Circuit Court Clerk, Barbara Hinson. Students were informed about the responsibilities of each of their offices, and then led on a guided tour of the building by Justice Center Security Officer, Joey Potts. At the conclusion of the tour, students stated they enjoyed learning more about their county government, and look forward to taking more chamber tours throughout the school year.
