Panthers fall to Mustangs in close contest

The Lewis County Panthers traveled to Loretto on Friday, September 15, for a region matchup with the Loretto Mustangs.

It was the Panthers that grasped the lead early when Micah Godfrey bounced away from Mustang defenders and sprinted 83-yards for a touchdown. Godfrey was good on his point after attempt and the Panthers took a 7-0 lead less than three minutes into the game.

Loretto responded with a first quarter drive into Panther territory and found the endzone on a 13-yard touchdown pass and successful point after to tie the game at 7-7.

Loretto took the lead midway through the second quarter when a drive deep into the Lewis County end of the field led to a 3-yard touchdown dive and a point after to make it 14-7 with the Mustangs on top.

Loretto would add to their lead just before the half with a 23-yard field goal to make it 17-7 at the half.

In the opening minutes of the second half, the Panthers would cut into the lead when Brycen McDonald hit Chaz Sparkman on a 52-yard touchdown pass and Godfrey's point after was good to make it a 17-14 game.

Loretto would again add to their lead just moments into the final period on an 87-yard run and point after to make it a ten-point game at 24-14.

The Panthers would respond with another big run from Godfrey, another 83-yard touchdown run and point after that cut the Loretto lead back to three at 24-21. But Loretto held on to the lead and sent the Panthers home with a 24-21 loss.

Micah Godfrey had a huge night for the Panther offense in the loss with a school-record 276 yards on the ground on 15 carries and 2 long touchdown runs. Drew ray had 6 carries for 4 yards, Fletch Kelsey 1 carry for 3 yards, and Brycen McDonald 1 carry for 2 yards. Brycen McDonald was 17-28 passing for 185 yards with a touchdown and 3 interceptions. Chaz Sparkman had 9 catches for 124 yards and a touchdown, Fletch Kelsey 5 for 33, Dakota Hull 2 for 19, and Kobe Feichtinger 1 for 9.

Drew Ray anchored the Panther defense with 10 tackles, Chaz Sparkman had 9 tackles, 1 for loss, and an interception, Tim Brown 9 tackles, Brennan Davis 8 tackles and a sack, Eli Carroll 5 tackles and a sack, Nathanial Caamal 4 tackles with 1 for loss, Ethan Ray and Micah Godfrey 4 tackles each, Jaylen Murphy 3 tackles with 1 for loss, Kobe Feichtinger 3 tackles, Kade Carroll 2 tackles, and Fletch Kelsey, Dakota Hull, and Reggie Wade 1 tackle each.
