Over 100 fire fighters and personnel from multiple agencies responded to a wildfire that consumed more than 300 acres in a cornfield near Summertown on Friday afternoon (10/20/2023). At 3:22 PM, E-911 received a report of a brush fire near Stephenson Road and Old North Military Road southeast of Summertown. Arriving units from Ethridge and Summertown quickly determined that windy and dry conditions were causing the fire to spread and that additional resources would be needed to fight the blaze.
At one point, several structures along Old North Military Road were threatened and residents were asked to evacuate. Firefighters and personnel from Tennessee Forestry were successful in stopping the approaching flames before any damage was done. By 6:00 PM, fires were generally under control with only a few hot spots remaining.
Personnel remained on scene after 8:00 pm when it was determined that it was safe for units to secure. There were no reported injuries or damage to permanent structures and cause of the fire is under investigation.
Agencies responding included: Units from multiple Lawrence County Fire Departments, Lawrenceburg Fire, Box 50, Brentwood Fire, Franklin Fire, Giles County Fire, Williamson County Fire, Lewis County Fire, Maury County Fire, EMA Personnel from Lawrence, Maury, Giles, and Williamson Counties, Lawrence County EMS, Lawrence County Sheriff's Department, Tennessee Forestry Service, Tennessee Highway Patrol, and Tennessee Emergency Management Agency.
Several area farmers also assisted by cutting fire breaks with their own equipment. Officials are asking area residents to be extremely careful with open flames during the current dry conditions which are affecting Lawrence and surrounding counties.
