Tennesseans Experience Earthquake

Lake and Dyer Counties kickstarted their weekend by experiencing a light 3.3 magnitude earthquake. On Friday, October 20th at around 10:00 p.m., “the whole house shook twice, and I could hear stuff through the house clinging together,” explained Maria Kirk. Residents from Troy and Jackson agreed it was very strongly felt. Brooke Baker said, “I live in Jackson, and it shook my house. I thought something landed on my roof.” Anthony Bower pointed out that the New Madrid fault line has been getting more active over the last couple of months, and there are numerous accounts of people experiencing it from Kentucky to Tennessee to Missouri.

Shallow earthquakes, like this one of 11.3 km, are closer to the surface of the earth so are felt more strongly. A second report from the Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology listed the quake at a magnitude 3.4.
