Abbie Gray, 68, a woman of love and laughter, passed away peacefully on December 8, 2023, in her hometown of Columbia, where she was also born on March 11, 1955. The daughter of the late Andrew Tommy Gray and Birdie Staggs Gray, Abbie lived a life characterized by her unwavering faith, her joyous spirit, and her deep-rooted love for her family and friends.
The Gray family home was always filled with warmth and humor, thanks to Abbie's infectious laughter and her talent for making everyday moments special. She was a devoted sister to her siblings, Barbara Ashworth, William Gray, Judy Cuevas, Lois Harrington, and Michael Gray, who survive her, and she held cherished memories of her late siblings Linda Varnadoe, Jerry Gray, Dedra Gray, and Jackie Gray.
Abbie's legacy continues through her loving children, Bill Gray (with his wife Shannon), Sue Sims, and B.J. (Amber) Burke. She was the proud grandmother of Haley, Drew, Brooklyn, Brylan, and Spencer, each of whom brought immense joy to her life. Abbie's family was her pride and joy, and she instilled in them the values of love, kindness, and the importance of family.
Her very special friend, Michael Hinson, along with a host of nieces and nephews, will fondly remember Abbie for her kindness, her humor, and her faith-filled spirit.
Known as the neighborhood babysitter, Abbie played a nurturing role in the lives of many children, filling their lives with care and affection. Her work was more than a job; it was a testament to her loving nature and her desire to make a positive impact on the world, one child at a time.
Abbie's faith was the cornerstone of her existence. As an active member of Highland Baptist Church, she lived her beliefs every day, finding solace and strength in reading her Bible. She will always be remembered reciting her favorite verse from the bible, Philippians 4:13- I can do all things through Christ which strengthen me.
Her interests and hobbies reflected the simplicity and beauty she found in life. Abbie had an affinity for sunflowers, which to her symbolized sunshine and happiness. She cherished family gatherings, where she could be found playing cards, sharing stories, and spreading joy.
Abbie's approach to life was one of contentment and happiness. She embraced the simple life, always happy with no worries. Her life was about loving others and giving of herself, a mission she fulfilled daily. With an open heart and mind, she never met a stranger, and her ability to love unconditionally was her greatest gift to the world.
