January 14, 1954

Most of Lewis County had been in a deep freeze several days with the low temperature in Hohenwald being reported as 9° Fahrenheit, “the weather man forecasts that warmer weather brings snow or rain.”

The Lewis County Quarterly Court passed a resolution allowing Gulf International Gas Company permission to lay a natural gas pipeline across the county.

A fire originating from a furnace caused minor damage at Lawrence Hickerson’s store.

Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Nestor, Jr. announced the birth of their daughter, Nell Elizabeth.

Mr. and Mrs. John Anderson celebrated their 50th anniversary.

Funeral services were held for Peggy Edwards, 19; Mary Kelley, 50; Frank Poag, 77; and for W.C. Wade, 55.

Ladies wool coats were on sale at the Federated store for $15.00; Men’s dress oxfords were on sale for $2.98.

“Trail Blazers,” starring Alan Hale, Jr., and “Vigilante Terror,” starring Wild Bill Elliott and Mary Ellen Kary, were the Friday and Saturday movies showing at the Strand Theatre.

January 16, 1964

Type Three of the Sabin Oral Polio vaccine would be given January 17 to students during school hours. Any other person who had not received Type Three could receive it from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. on that day.

The Goodman-McCaig garage was destroyed by a fire caused by an explosion in the paint shop.

Thomas Anthony was named pastor of Cumberland Presbyterian Church.

Brown Grover was named minister of the Little Swan Church of Christ.

The annual Lewis County Chess Tournament began with sixteen people registered to participate.

Daniel Prater enlisted in the U.S. Army.

Navy Fireman Grady Brown was serving aboard the USS Shangri-La.

The LCHS Panthers defeated Loretto with a score of 56 to 53. Mike Grimes led the team in scoring with 22 points.

Mr. and Mrs. Billy Grover announced the birth of their daughter, Patricia.

Levi Baker was honored on his 74th birthday with a dinner held at his home.

Funeral services were held for John Odom, 79.

“Souls for Sale,” starring Vincent Price, and “Women of Nazi Germany” were the Friday and Saturday movies showing at the Highlands Drive-In Theater.

January 17, 1974

Mayor Dol Willis received a $2,600 check from Governor Winfield Dunn. The check was one fourth of a state grant set up for a solid waste improvement project in Hohenwald.

The new location for solid waste disposal was opened with a garbage trench being dug that measured 50 feet by 500 feet by 20 feet deep.

Robert Johnson was elected chair of the Hohenwald Recreation and Golf Club Board of Directors.

Vandals broke into the Hohenwald Recreation and Golf Club and the Pineview Church of Christ. Nothing was taken from the golf club, but lockers were broken into and contents strewn. No vandalism occurred at the church, but canned goods were reported missing from the pantry.

A two-page supplement entitled “The Farm Report” was published in the paper. The supplement discussed news, financial information, and happenings at the Farm commune.

Pam Hamm participated in the Fairest of the Fair contest at the Tennessee Association of Fairs Convention held in Nashville.

Air Force Sergeant Lawrence Tuttle arrived for duty at Barksdale Air Force Base, LA.

The LCHS Panthers defeated Santa Fe with a score of 51 to 38. Randy Carroll led the team in scoring with 22 points.

The LCHS Pantherettes defeated Santa Fe with a score of 47 to 30. Susie Davis and Diane Fite were the top scorers for the team with 15 points each.

The following births were announced: Randy Keith, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Duncan; and Christie Lynn, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dwight Webb.

Funeral services were held for Charles Griffin, 73; Florine Marbet, 71; and for Mrs. Arthur Plummer, 74.

January 19, 1984

The City of Hohenwald hired a consulting firm from Nashville to evaluate the city’s existing landfill, and to do a preliminary design evaluation and cost analysis for a new waste-to-energy facility.

Waldrup Brown, Jr. resigned as president of First Citizens Bank to accept a position at Union Planters National Bank in Memphis.

Tom Lawson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Lawson of Hohenwald, was appearing on the soap opera, All My Children. Lawson portrayed Jeff Hill, manager of the Hearth Restaurant, in the show.

Josephine Jackson retired from Henry I. Siegel after 20 years of service.

Sonic announced the following people as winners in their 1983 Big Christmas Give-A-Way: turkey won by Coy Reeves and Lela Quillen; ham won by Carla Staggs, and Odyssey game won by Janet Wix and Wanda Durham.

“Without a Stitch” and “School Girls” were the weekend movies showing at the Highlands Drive-In Theatre.

January 20, 1994

The main headline for the week was “Rain, Sleet, Snow: Lewis County Struck By Winter Storm.” Mother Nature wreaked havoc in Lewis County, bringing snow an icy road conditions, resulting in hazardous travel. A half-inch of snow fell on December 14th, the temperature dropped to 2 degrees on December 16th, and rain followed by more snow resulted in an additional inch of snow on December 17, 1994.

A special day was being planned for January 22 to honor local musician Ed Quillen.

Jack Turner was promoted to senior revenue officer with the State of Tennessee, Department of Revenue, Tax Enforcement Division, Columbia Office.

Walter and Sheila Morris announced the birth of their son, Nathaniel Ryan.

Funeral services were held for Delores Baker, 66; and for Hazel Jorgensen, 82.

January 15, 2004

Lottery sales would begin in Lewis County on January 20. Five local businesses were approved to sale scratch and win lottery tickets.

Lewis County Museum of Local and Natural History announced a planned expansion to create a Discovery Center for on-site learning and science exploration.

The South Central Tennessee Career Center was featured in the “A Closer Look…” column.

A large crowed attended the annual stockholders meeting for the Hohenwald Golf and Recreation Club where questions concerning the possibility of the City of Hohenwald acquiring the club were addressed.

Tax Refund Xpress, located at 491 East Main Street, held a Grand Opening and ribbon cutting on January 12.

The LCHS Panthers defeated Summertown with a score of 54 to 50. Luke Curfman was the top scorer for the team 19 points and 4 rebounds. The Panthers defeated Page with a score of 55 to 37. Luke Curfman lead the team in scoring with 17 points and 4 blocked shots.

The LCHS Lady Panthers defeated Summertown with a score of 67 to 45. Britni Tenison led the team in scoring with 19 points, 10 rebounds, and 2 blocked shots. The Lady Panthers defeated Page with a score of 60 to 44. Casey Anderson led the team in scoring with 22 points and 4 rebounds.

Members of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 127 made patriotic wreaths and presented them as gifts to veterans in Lewis County Manor in appreciation of their service to our country.

Eaton Corporation presented service awards to the following employees: Ronnie Odom, 25 years; Lonzo Woodall, 25 years; Mike Reynolds, 20 years; and Joey Hinson, 15 years.

Jimmy and Denise Brackeen announced the birth of their daughter, Rebecca Anne.

Funeral services were held for Ruby Choate, 91; Estlee Barber, 85; Jerry Durham, 60; Carol Graves, 54; Mitchell Hester, 67; Virginia Hickerson, 68; Freddie Prince, 75; and for LaNeta Turnbow, 41.
