With the winter temps finally setting in, it’s time to make sure we’re well prepared for the storms that sometimes come with it. What happens if the temperature drops? What about if the power to your home and/or business goes out?
If you’ve thought about this before the temps drop, you’ve probably done all the preparations, including: sealing and insulating, chimney inspections, ensuring smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are in good, working order, etc.
However, if you haven’t, don’t despair. It’s not too late. First, stock up on essentials like candles, batteries for battery powered heat and lighting, blankets, food and water. Make sure medicines and emergency numbers are easily accessible and that your phones are fully charged.
If the power does go out, remembering these hints will help serve you most efficiently. Refrigerated foods typically last four hours, and you can expect food in the freezer to be edible between 24 and 48 hours. Also, if the power is expected to be out for more than a few hours, drain the pipes and hoses to prevent freezing/bursting. For keeping everything running, portable generators may seem like the best solution, but they produce carbon monoxide — an odorless, colorless gas that can cause sudden death. According to the CDC, if you suspect carbon monoxide poisoning, seek emergency help immediately. The most common symptoms include headache, dizziness, weakness, nausea, vomiting, chest pain and confusion.
When traveling, it’s important to keep the gas tank full and to have an emergency kit in the trunk (which are good ideas in any weather). A good emergency kit would include: first-aid kit, jumper cables, basic toolkit, non-perishable food, waters, emergency lighting, chargers, warm clothes, extra blankets and sleeping bags. If you do become stranded, immediately tie a brightly colored cloth to the antenna, making it easier for rescuers to find you. Also, every hour, run the engine for about 10 minutes. This will run heat and charge cellphones.
