May 13, 1954

The kidnapping charge against the woman accused of abducting a three-month-old infant and later giving the child to a couple in Hohenwald was dismissed due to her mental health condition. The woman was returned to the mental health facility from which she had escaped before the kidnapping incident on April 13.

A construction worker received serious injuries after slipping working on the new factory building and falling 14 feet.

Mr. and Mrs. Newton Churchwell celebrated their 51st anniversary.

Funeral services were held for Homer Bass, 62; Andy Beard, 74; Allen Darden, 67; and for Sarah Flanigan, 76.

“Private Eye,” starring Leo Gorcey and the Bowery Boys, and “The Old Overland Trail,” starring Rex Allen were the Friday and Saturday double feature at the Strand Theatre.

May 14, 1964

The seasonal opening of Memorial Park would be held May 15. A. O. Ramay would serve as master of ceremonies. Howard Warf would make a short talk at the beginning of the program. Donald Duncan would also speak to young people on how they could help take care of the park and its facilities. A greased pole climbing contest would be held, followed by softball games.

The Hohenwald Babe Ruth baseball team defeated the Perry County Blue team with a score of 9 to 4. Tony Holt was the winning pitcher for the team.

Mrs. A. L. Poore and Alice Plummer were honored for their birthdays with a dinner hosted by their brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. N. T. Plummer.

George and Mamie Davis celebrated their 59th anniversary.

Funeral services were held for Hunt Kittrell, 89.

Advertised specials this week at Piggly Wiggly included three pounds of ground beef for $1.00, a dozen lemons for $0.19, a quart of Miracle Whip for $0.39, and ten pounds of Plymouth meal for $0.49.

“Paris When It Sizzles,” starring William Holden and Audrey Hepburn, and “Strait-Jacket,” starring Joan Crawford, were the Friday and Saturday night double feature at the Highlands Drive-In.

May 16, 1974

Former LCHS students were planning an A. B. Sisco Appreciation Day to honor Sisco for his many years of service rendered to the community and to the students of LCHS. The Lewis County Civic Club would sponsor the event which was planned for June 8 at the Hohenwald Recreation and Golf Club. Committees were formed from each class from 1942 through 1971 to assist with the event and help notify former students.

Richard Cooper joined the staff of Lewis County Hospital as a laboratory technician.

Lorna Brewer and Ricky Morrow were the local winners of the 1974 Meriwether Lewis Electric Cooperative Essay contest. Morrow and a student from Waverly were the winners of the trip to Washington, D.C.

The following births were announced: Daniel Cleon, son of Mr. and Mrs. Leon Flippo; Ashley Taylor, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Don Pollock; Justin Carl, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Reeves; Larry Michael, son of Mr. and Mrs. Larry Carroll; and Stephanie Lenore, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G. W. Stephens.

Funeral services were held for Mrs. Buford Runions, 65.

“Electra Glide in Blue,” starring Robert Blake and Billy Bush, and “Truck Stop Women,” starring Claudia Jennings and Lieux Dressler, were the Friday and Saturday double feature at the Highlands Drive-In.

May 17, 1984

Two persons were arrested and a warrant issued for the arrest of a third person in connection with the robbery at DeFoe’s Jewelry. Approximately $2,500 was taken during the burglary, with most of the merchandise being recovered when the arrest was made.

Catherine Davis, a kindergarten teacher at Hohenwald Elementary, wrote and published an alphabet book entitled, “Hooray for Letters.”

Waymer Staggs caught six largemouth bass with the largest weighing 4.5 pounds while fishing with Don Jones at Normandy.

Miranda Morrow won first place in beginner basic strut and military strut at the Dixieland Open Twirling Contest in Hopkinsville, KY.

Sannie Odil was presented a certificate for the Lewis County Senior Citizen’s kitchen. The award was given by the South Central Human Resources Agency for the excellent performance of the facility in meal preparation for the “Meals On Wheels” program.

The following births were announced: Jennifer Nicole, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Tommy Sullivan; Helga Rebecca, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Barber; Rachel Helene, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Don Robnett; Michael Lee, son of Tommy and Pam Doyle; and Ashley Lauren, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Larry Spiess.

Funeral services were held for Kate Guthrie, 87; and for Rose Treadwell, 58.

“Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter,” starring Kimberly Beck, Peter Barton, and Crispin Glover, was the weekend movie showing at the Highlands Drive-In.

May 19, 1994

Former Tennessee Commissioner of Education J. Howard Warf was named the 1994 Peabody College Distinguished Alumnus by Vanderbilt University’s Peabody College.

Judy Eads, CEO of Lewis Community and Perry Memorial Hospitals, announced her resignation effective June 15.

An Open House was held at the City of Hohenwald Fire Hall on May 7. Approximately 750 individuals came to tour the fire hall and view the new fire truck.

“Memphis Blues” would hold a free concert at the bandshell at Wilhelm Telplatz on May 21 as part of a spring concert series.

Tim Tiller, former LCHS student and sophomore second baseman for Columbia State Community College, led the Charger hitting during the regular season with a .405 average and was ranked ninth in Region 7 in hitting, leading his team to championship play. Tiller was also a first team All State/Region selection as a second baseman.

Justin Reeves caught a 20-pound blue catfish while fishing at Roy Burns’ catfish ponds on Highway 412.

Kandysue Savage was spotlighted in the “Teacher Feature” column.

The Lewis County Historical Society announced the publication of a history and family history heritage book.

Darrell and Pam Shirley announced the birth of their daughter, Alicia Dawn.

Funeral services were held for Robert Beard, Sr., 77; Norman Harden, 68; Jessie James, Jr., 70; Era Moore, 74; Michael Paschall, 38; and Odell Pevehouse, 84.

May 13, 2004

City Mayor Bob Burklow signed a proclamation recognizing May 9-15 as Police Week in Hohenwald.

One person was in custody following an eyewitness account of a double homicide that took place on Piney Creek Road.

The Lewis County Historical Society was awarded a 2004 Maddox Foundation Grant.

The Swiss Colony Research Project, sponsored by the Lewis County Historical Society, furnished the county with a new drawing of the base map of the City of Hohenwald reconstructed from 1899 and 1895 maps.

Sascha Noble graduated from advanced individual training at Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD.

Doug Pfiester caught a 45-pound black grouper while fishing with Coy Norris in Panama City, FL.

Jesse Nash was the LCMS Student of the Week.

Sherrel O’Guin, a 96-year old patient at Lewis County Manor, was honored through the Tennessee Health Care Association’s “Who’s Who in Tennessee Nursing Homes” program.

Iva Odom celebrated her 80th birthday with a celebration hosted by her daughters, Wanda and Melinda.

Funeral services were held for Lula Hinson, 88; James Irwin, 25; and for Derrick Mathis, 24.
