One Day at a Time

Series: One day at a time | Story 146

Well it is a warm and almost hot, sunny morning here in our little valley. It has already been feeling like summertime.

Here on our front porch there is always a little cool breeze blowing and during the hot Summer months it is comfortable out here in the mornings.

The cats ate their breakfast early this morning and have now gone off to find themselves a cool place to nap for the day. Sometimes it is like they eat, drink and disappear.

Bob always keeps fresh water set out for the cats. When it is hot like this or dry, animals need more water, just like people do.

Early this morning I looked across the yard and next to the road there was three deer grazing, they saw me but continued to eat.

We have not seen many deer around here in a while. Lately we have started seeing a few squirrels, we even seen a possum in the yard the other night.

There used to be lots of critters around here, from deer and turkeys to coyotes and foxes to squirrels and chipmunks, to name a few, but not now it is like something came through and got all of them.

We walked down to our creek, the water is normally a good five to six feet lower than the top of the creek banks. I think a lot of animals go to the creek to get a drink.

Over the last few years during the Summer months when it gets hot and dry the creek has been drying up. Then when we get heavy rains it can almost get out of it’s banks, many years ago it would get out at least once or twice a year.

This must be hay season because we have been seeing a lot of people cutting hay and seeing a lot of hay bales out in the fields.

Our neighbor is cutting his hay now and soon he will be stacking those big round bales down near the creek, so his cows will have hay to eat this Winter. A farmer’s work is never done.

People’s gardens are starting to produce those great fresh vegetables. Our daughter Pam came over and we sit on the porch for a while, they have been doing a lot of mowing and gardening.

Some of our friends have went to the Amish and they already have got tomatoes and squash and other vegetables, but the Amish always have their vegetables early.

Our friend Chuck stopped by to visit for a minute, and he said his garden was doing really good. Last year he brought us some vegetables out of his garden and they sure was good.

Our neighbor always plants a big garden each year and they always bring us vegetable each year. It is so good to have good neighbors and friends and family, that share their gardens, we sure miss having a garden.

We had gardens for many years and once you start eating those fresh vegetables out of the garden, it all most seems like store bought ones do not have a taste.

It is hard to believe it is already Summer, but these hot days sure do feel like it. It seems like Spring just went by in a hurry and you know Summer probably will too.

Before long we will be enjoying Fall. The trees will be beautiful when their leaves turn bright orange, yellow and red. The days will only be warm and the nights cool.

Fall and Winter are two of my favorite times of year, especially Winter when the forecast is calling for snow and I have a big pot of soup on top of the old wood heating stove.

For breakfast this morning I made sausage gravy and a big pan of good brown cat head biscuits. It will not be much longer until we will be able to have a big slice of fresh tomato to go with that gravy, Bob loves tomato slices with his breakfast.

Bob has now finished the breakfast dishes. I always have to fix him a good breakfast, because even though he still does not sweep floors, he is the best dishwasher.

I am not going to worry about tomorrow and I am going to take one day at a time because God still has it all under control and He is the light at the end of the tunnel.

God bless,

Evelyn “E.T.” Trevathan
