Serving Hohenwald, Lewis County Tennessee Since 1898

Lewis County Person Of The Week: Becky King

Q.) Can you tell me a little bit about yourself?

A.) My name is Rebecca Susan Barrett King. I go by "Becky King." I'm the daughter of the late Rev. Eugene Barrett and Wanda Jones Barrett. I'm the oldest of three children. My brothers are Brad Barrett and Bob Barrett. I'm the wife of Clifford King Jr., we have been married for 58 years. We lost our daughter Kelly Hughes just this year.

Q.) Where did you grow up?

A.) I was born in Princeton, Ky. We moved to New Providence a community between Fort Campbell, Ky. and Clarksville, Tn. It was there that my daddy felt the call into the ministry and we moved to Mt. Pleasant, Tn. when I was a Freshman in High School and I graduatedfrom there in 1965.

Q.) What is one of your fondest childhood memories?

A.) Our family always spent our vacations in Gatlinburg, Tn. Mother driving and Daddy riding "Shotgun" with the windows down, waving to the people sitting on their front porches or workking in the fields. Daddy calling to them to have a good day! At that time it was very embarrassing for us kids. Remember at that time we were driving on a two lane road in the mountains.

Q.) What did you want to be as a kid? What did you actually become?

A.) I have always loved children and I wanted to be a mother. We adopted our daughter when she was 3 months old, as she grew up, I started babysitting in our home. I also was a cake decorator and catered weddings for friends in Hohenwald and surrounding counties. I have been a Sunday School teacher for many years. I worked for the Blue Grass Regional Libraryprocessing books, driving the book mobile, helping in libraries in nine counties in Middle Tennessee. Lewis Co. was one of the stops. We had bookmoble stations in homes, grocery stores, libraries. Two counties we had to stay over night, they were Wayne and Perry. I have become a wife, Mother, Granny,Nanny Beck, a friend to many and a Christian (Praise The Lord). My husband and I have been members of the Lewis County Senior Citizens Center since 2007. We were invited to come visit by Herman & Hazel Adair and Dot & Vance Potts. We fell in love with all the special people there. It is a privilege to be serving on the LewisCounty Board and was voted to also serve as its Club President. My husband and I have enjoyed our time at the center watching it grow.

Q.) What are some of your favorite hobbies/ how do you like to spend your free time?

A.) I love to read books, work puzzles, play cards, and Shuffleboard with friends from the Lewis Co. Senior Center and our friends from Hickman Co. Senior Center.

Q.) If you could go anywhere, in or out of the states, where would it be? Why?

A.) I have been to the Bahamas, but there is no place like home!!! The United States is the best!

Q.) What is one of your favorite things about living in Hohenwald?

A.) I love the way the people care about their neighbors! I would also like to personally "Thank" The Mayor's, The Police Department, The Sheriff Department, and The Churches in Hohenwald for their continued support to the Lewis Co. Seniors in our community.

Q.) What is your favorite time of year? Why?

A.) Fall and Winter! The Beautiful colors of fall! I even like a "little snow"

Q.) If you could invite any famous person over for dinner, who would it be? Why?

A.) Red Skelton a true entertainer with a heart of Gold. Every show he ended with "Goodnight and May God Bless". He was a true American!!

Q.) Is there any life advice you could give to our readers?

A.) Remember to love your parents while they are still with you and hug and tell your children that they are very special to you. Remember that in the blink of an eye you can be old and in need of a friend. We at the Lewis Co. Senior Center want you to know that the Seniors are still in need of friends, and a place to come and fellowship, activity to keep our minds working, smiles and hugs do help!

Please remember to enjoy each day because life is a long learning process and a blessing. Please teach your children about the Lord and all that he has done for them and will continue to guide them through life.

"Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might."

"Love your neighbor as yourself"
