County Passes Budget With No New Taxes

For the tenth consecutive year in a row, Lewis County Commissioners have passed a county government budget that includes no property tax increases!

Commissioners met in regular session on Monday, July 24, 2023 and unanimously approved the overall county budget for the 2024-2025 Fiscal Year. The total budget is approximately $40 Million, and includes the County General, Solid Waste, Highway Department, Schools and Debt Service accounts.

During the meeting, Lewis County Mayor Jonah Keltner praised Commissioners and his office staff for working hard to balance this year’s budget. He reminded them it wasn’t easy, as the initial rough draft presented to the Commission back in the Spring had a $1.2 Million deficit.

However, after lots of hard work, long meetings, tough cuts, compromises, and help from a boost in year-end revenue collections, Commissioners were able to pass a conservative, balanced budget that did not require any tax increases.

“I’m very proud that Lewis County remains one of the lowest-taxed counties in the entire state, which is a testament to the great group of Commissioners we have who are wise and conservative when preparing the budget. It’s also a positive reflection of the fiscally responsible county officials and department heads we have, who do an excellent job managing the budgets they are given each year by our legislative body,” stated Mayor Keltner.
