Series: Tennessee 28th District Update | Story 174

The 113th General Assembly has adjourned for 2024, and it was a very successful year. We have taken measures for Tennessee to be a better place to live, work and to raise a family.

Voting is the cornerstone of our democracy and the best way to preserve Tennessee values

Tennessee is proud to be ranked #1 in country for election integrity

Following the assassination attempt against President Trump, the engagement at the Republican National Convention, which convened the following week, was off the charts, with 28.4 million viewers during President Trump’s acceptance speech. Americans are energized and realize the importance of the upcoming election. This year, the best way to capitalize on that energy is to vote.

This election season is important on every level. From local, state and federal elections, the future of our community, state and nation depend on engaged American citizens and Tennesseans to show up to the polls and vote. There are many important races in the August 1 primaries and November 5 general election across the state.

I encourage all citizens to vote and prayerfully consider the candidates to make informed decisions at the ballot box.

Voting is not merely a civic duty; it is the cornerstone of democracy. It is the mechanism by which we shape our government and society. It is a right that countless Americans have died to establish and protect. By exercising the right to vote, we honor the sacrifices of those who came before us to safeguard democratic principles and freedom. Through elections, citizens choose leaders who will advocate for their interest, enact policies and govern on their behalf.

While every opportunity to vote is important, this election season is perhaps the most important of the century. There are many out-of-state and foreign influences seeking to change the direction of our schools, communities, state and country. One of the best ways to protect our conservative Tennessee values is to show up to the polls and vote.

In Tennessee, we have worked hard to ensure that when citizens go to the polls, they can be certain their vote is secure. Tennessee is ranked number one in the country for election integrity. This is due to many years of lawmakers working with the Tennessee Secretary of State’s office to protect the ballot box.

In the volunteer state, it is easy to vote and hard to cheat. In order to vote, Tennesseans must present a valid state or federal photo ID and register to vote 30 days before the election. For eligible voters, registering to vote is easy to do online at http://www.GoVoteTN.gov or by mail.

To protect against voter fraud, Tennessee actively works to ensure Tennessee voter registration lists are up-to-date. Ineligible voters are routinely removed from voter rolls through list maintenance procedures. This year, I was proud to sponsor a new law that requires the coordinator of elections to compare the statewide voter registration database with the Department of Safety’s database to verify illegal aliens and non-U.S. citizens are not registered to vote.

In this political era, maintaining election integrity is a top priority in Tennessee, and while we are proud of our work, we can always do more to protect the ballot box in Tennessee. I am committed to continue working with my colleagues in the General Assembly and other state and local officials to protect our elections.

I encourage all citizens to vote in the upcoming August 1 primary. And, if you miss the primary, be sure to register now for the November 5 general election. If you need any assistance registering to vote, please contact my office at 615-741-3100
