August 12, 1954

The City of Hohenwald asked residents who had an apartment, sleeping rooms, or trailer space for rent to contact City Hall. Another major pipeline construction job was underway that would pass just west of Hohenwald, and the City wanted to bring workers into town to boost the local economy.

Carl Couch and Joe Duncan were presented ten-year service pins by Genesco Personnel Manager Earl Baker.

The State Game and Fish Commission issued a bag limit of six squirrels per day during open season.

Funeral services were held for John Churchwell, 77; Carl Edwards, Sr., 58; and for Mollie Garrison, 82.

“Crime Wave,” starring Sterling Hayden and Gene Nelson, and “Savage Frontier,” starring Wild Bill Elliott, were the Friday and Saturday movies showing at the Strand Theatre. An “adults only” “peek-a-boo” show billed as “a smart show for sophisticated people with a broad mind” was also scheduled for Saturday night at 10:30 p.m.

August 13, 1964

The Lewis County Fair was scheduled for August 24 through 29. The event was sponsored by the Lewis County Ag Workers Association. Activities included a mule pulling, fiddlers contest, and Fairest of the Fair.

Tommy Grimsley was named the Lewis County Game and Fish officer.

The LCHS accepted an invitation to participate in the 2nd International Banana Festival at Twin Cities, KY.

Alice Plummer would attend the 1964 World’s Fair in New York as part of a Merle Norman Cosmetics delegation

Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Ammons announced the birth of their daughter, Lisa Kaye.

Dewey Durham was honored for his birthday with a dinner at the home of his daughter.

City Beauty Shop advertised that it was now open in the back of the City Barber Shop and was operated by Betty Couch and Dot Casteel.

“From Russia with Love,” starring Sean Connery and “The Incredible Mr. Limpet,’ starring Don Knotts and Carole Cook, were the Friday and Saturday double feature at the Highlands Drive-In.

August 15, 1974

Susie Davis was crowned Fairest of the Fair at the 1974 Lewis County Fair. Her alternates were Tanya Roden and Lorna Schmittou.

Maria Devore was selected winner of the Junior Review at the Fairest of the Fair contest. Her alternates were Rhonda Reeves and Lisa Quillen.

Jim Brewer was first place winner in the boys division of 1 to 3 year olds at the Tiny Tot Review held at the Lewis County Fair. Bobby Roden won second place and Jeremy Talley won third place.

Mr. and Mrs. William Smith announced the birth of their daughter, Tracy.

Funeral services were held for Roy Curry, 52; Robert Harwood, 61; Robert McNabb, infant; A.P. Rigsby, Jr., 52; and for Sara Talley, 31; Dorothy Turnbow, 50..

“Foxy Brown,” starring Pam Grier and Peter Brown, and “Speedway,” starring Elvis Presley and Nancy Sinatra, were the Friday and Saturday movies showing at the Highlands Drive-In Theater.

August 16, 1984

Contracts were let for improvements to Lewis County Airport, including the extension of the runway and navigational lighting installed.

Betty Nutt was presented the Outstanding Instructor Award for excellence in the area of Home Economics at the Tennessee Vocational Association conference held at MTSU. She was also selected Teacher of the Year 1983-84 by the Tennessee Association of Vocational Home Economics Teachers.

Michael Turnbow was appointed to the Board of Directors for the American Society of Nondestructive Testing.

Robert Bowman of Sonic Drive-In purchased the first cookbook from the Lewis County Jaycee Women. The book was printed and was sold to raise funds for Camp Discovery, a summer camp program for mentally and multi-handicapped children.

David Byrd grew a 12-pound muskmelon in his vegetable garden.

Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Barber celebrated their 50th anniversary with a reception held at the home of their son, Willard.

Joe and Jo Lynn Whitehead announced the birth of their daughter, Alicia Dawn.

Funeral services were held for Claydean Barber, 58; Bessie Culp, 80; and for Virginia Harder, 66.

“Reckless” and “Making the Grade” were the weekend movies showing at the Highlands Drive-in Theatre.

August 11, 1994

The major headline this week was “Kilpatrick Elected Sheriff: 63.55% Voting Turnout for the County.”

A check in the amount of $41,000 was presented to Terry Bunch and Mann Nutt, members of the Tomorrow Committee for Lewis County. The money would be used for improvements in Memorial Park and the Lewis County Senior Citizens Center.

Danny White and Chuck Greeson won the Bowfishing Tournament held by the High Forest Archery Club on August 5th and 6th, catching 84 pounds of fish. Kevin Hinson and Rodney Fontaine won the biggest fish award, hauling in a four-foot, one inch gar.

The following births were announced: Kristin LeighAnn, daughter of Randall and Sandra Stewart; and Robert Jackson, son of Perry and Lisa Tuttle.

Elizabeth Whitehead celebrated her 56th birthday with a shopping trip and dinner with Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Morton.

Everette Hinson and Helen McDonald were honored with a birthday cookout at the home of Barbara Hinson.

Mr. and Mrs. Lee Adkins would celebrate their 60th anniversary on August 21 with a reception at the Memorial Park Community Building.

Funeral services were held for Evelyn Davenport, 54; Samuel Mercer, 60; and for Herman Talley, 77.

August 12, 2004

The main headline for the week was “Welcome Home 771st, Lewis County Thanks You.” Members of the National Guard 771st Maintenance Company were scheduled to Hohenwald on August 12 following a deployment to Kuwait. The unit had served in Kuwait for 15 months and had been away from home for 1.5 years.

Keg Springs Winery won a gold medal for their Strawberry Wine at the Indianapolis State Fair’s Indy International Wine Competition.

Linda Gavin and the Blackburn Farmstead Pioneer Museum were featured in the Chamber Spotlight Column.

Habitat for Humanity held a Paint Day event on July 23 through 25. Over 50 local volunteers scraped, painted, cleaned, and made minor repairs to a number of homes throughout the county.

Brandon and Nikki Hood announced the birth of their daughter, Emalea Michelle.

Funeral services were held for Betty Bost, 63; Austin Bullion, 71; Kevin Foster, 33; Edwin Gramling, 67; and for Imogene Tharp, 84.
