Serving Hohenwald, Lewis County Tennessee Since 1898
On the evening of August 24, 2024, a call came over the scanner, a report of “SHOTS FIRED.” Sheriff’s Deputy Dylan Pullum arrived on the scene where he located a male on the river. “I asked about the reports of gun shots,” Pullum stated, “and the man stated he has fired his gun three times as a form of S.O.S.” According to the man, he and seven other family members, three adults and four children, were kayaking on the river when night fell and they became stranded.
At that time, Pullum attempted to use his radio to notify other officers of the information, but as he grasped for his radio, it fell off and onto the ground. While attempting to retrieve it, the stranded male warned Pullum that there was a drop-off, but not before misjudging his footing, falling approximately 30 feet.
Sgt. Cody Atkinson arrived shortly after and was able to direct down river to an area Pullum was able to climb up and out of the river. Upon advisement of EMS, he went to Maury Regional E.R. to be checked for fractures, but he insisted not before all parties of the stranded family were rescued from the river.
