Serving Hohenwald, Lewis County Tennessee Since 1898
Dorothy Ferry McNaughton, a woman of laughter and wisdom, passed away peacefully on August 26, 2024, at the age of 98 in Hohenwald, surrounded by those that loved her. Born on February 26, 1926, in Lead, South Dakota, Dorothy's vibrant spirit and creative spark brightened the lives of all who knew her. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother, whose greatest joy was found in the achievements and milestones of her family.
Dorothy's journey began as the daughter of Roy and Lila Carter Ferry, who predeceased her, as did her cherished husband, Burdette McNaughton, her grandson Joseph Sherman, her sisters Lois Pinkham, JoAnn Swails, Dixie Holton, and Mary Walters, and her brothers Jimmie and Edmond Ferry. She leaves behind a legacy of love and laughter through her devoted son, Lloyd (Alicia) Sherman, and her caring daughter, Sharon Zerby. Dorothy's memory will be treasured by her grandchildren, Caleb (Sierra) Sherman, Anthony Sherman, Christine McDade, Michael (Erin) Cahill, Lindsay Birdwell, Andrew (Terri) Zerby, and Coralie (Blaine) McFarland, as well as her 15 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Joyce Ferry, who shared in many of Dorothy's life adventures.
Dorothy's professional life was marked by her meticulous and reliable work as an accountant until her well-deserved retirement. Her commitment to her career was paralleled only by her dedication to her community, as she served as a steadfast volunteer at the local food bank until the age of 92. Her giving nature extended beyond her professional and volunteer work; she was a treasured member of Highland Baptist Church, where her faith and fellowship were a cornerstone of her life.
Her interests were as varied as they were passionate. Dorothy was an avid card player, her quick wit and competitive spirit making her a formidable opponent at the card table. Cross-stitching was another of her talents. Always one to enjoy the finer things in life, Dorothy loved shopping, always on the lookout for the perfect gift or a new treasure for her home. She was a master at crosswords, a hobby that kept her mind sharp and entertained throughout the years.
Above all, Dorothy's family was the center of her world. She found immense joy in watching her grandson play football, cheering him on from the stands with pride and enthusiasm. Her advice was wise, her stories were funny, and her creativity knew no bounds. To sit with Dorothy was to be in the presence of a woman who knew the value of a good laugh and the importance of a kind word.
As per her wishes, Dorothy will be cremated, and an inurnment will take place at a later date at McCoy Cemetery in Meadow Grove, Nebraska. There, she will be laid to rest in a place that holds many fond memories and close to the hearts of those she loved.
