Glimpses of Hohenwald's Past

September 9, 1954

The Herald reported that dogs were being poisoned within town. Residents were reminded that it was illegal to poison animals, and pet owners were asked to keep their dogs confined until the poisoning either ceased or the guilty person or persons were caught.

The “With Our Service Boys” column reported that the following enlisted men completed basic training and were stationed at various camps throughout the United States: Tommy Bates, Bobby Edwards, Raymond Grinder, Franklin Haley, Alvin Jones, Carl Sims, and Elmer Staggs.

The LCHS Panthers defeated Mt. Pleasant with a score of 24 to 0. Left End Bobby Grinder scored three touchdowns, and Right End David Griner scored one touchdown.

Mary Webb was presented a pin by W.L. Tuttle in honor of ten years of service at Genesco Shoes.

The following births were announced: Janie and Janet, twin daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Jake Staggs; and Michael Ward, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ward Clayton.

Funeral services were held for Annie Hickerson, 106; and for Luther Campbell, 48.

Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Sanders announced their purchase of McClearens Grocery, located at 105 West Main, which would now operate under the name Sander’s Market.

“Phantom of the Rogue Morgue” and “Down Laredo Way,” starring Roy Rogers with Trigger, were the Friday and Saturday movies showing at the Strand Theatre.

September 10, 1964

A ten-year-old boy was stabbed in the back near his home in Sycamore Center by child of the same age. The injured boy was transported to Lewis County Hospital, where he was reported to be in satisfactory condition.

A tragic incident involving an accidental discharge of a shotgun resulted in the death of a Chicago resident who was on vacation in Hohenwald to visit family.

Airman First Class Robert Overbey arrived for duty in the Philippines.

Lynn Brown was promoted in the Air Force to the rank of Airman Third Class.

The following births were announced: Randy Eugene, son of Mr. and Mrs. Emerson Johnson; and Bryan Webb, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Greengrass.

Mrs. D. C. Grimes was honored for her 86th birthday with a dinner at the home of her daughter.

Funeral services were held for Robert Baker, 24; Joseph Carroll, 63; Hollis Chessor, 46; and for Rosa O’Guin, 62.

Kittrell Motor Company advertised a $75 bargain day where select vehicles could be purchased with a $75 down payment.

“633 Squadron,” starring Cliff Robertson, and “Hud,” starring Paul Newman and Patricia Neal, were the weekend movies showing at the Highlands Drive-In Theater.

September 12, 1974

The MLEC Board of Trustees passed a resolution recognizing the passing of Robert C. Harwood as a significant loss to both the electric cooperative and the community in which he lived. Mr. Harwood served as a trustee for MLEC and was among the first employees appointed when the cooperative was established on August 18, 1939.

Lillie Mitchell was selected as Outstanding Young Woman of America for 1974.

For the fifth consecutive year, the Bible Quiz Team from the First Pentecostal Church of Hohenwald secured the quiz championship for the Tennessee District of the United Pentecostal Church. Keith Ferguson achieved the highest individual score, averaging 82 points per game. The team also included members Vicky Atkins, Debbie Hooper, Sheila Hooper, and Diana Williams.

Two businesses and one church reported burglary incidents. Approximately 18 firearms were reported stolen from H&S Sporting Goods. Additionally, Horner Furniture Company reported the theft of three televisions, two stereos, and one radio. Lomax Church of Christ also experienced a burglary, during which two amplifiers and a microphone were taken.

Arthur Calvert caught fourteen bream while fishing in the Buffalo River.

The following births were announced: Kelly Carlene, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Austin Nance; and Tina Barbara, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Malcolm Bonville.

Funeral services were held for Tony Kelly, 16.

Helton Drug Company advertised a Grand Opening to be held September 9 through 14, 1974, with a 15% discount on all items in store.

“Togetherness,” starring George Hamilton and Peter Lawford, and “Foursome” were the Friday and Saturday movies showing at the Highlands Drive-In Theater.

September 13, 1984

Hohenwald was invited by the State of Tennessee to participate in “Tennessee ’86-An American Homecoming”—a giant statewide celebration of Tennessee communities.

The Sheriff’s Department confiscated 27 marijuana plants, 3 to 6 feet tall, in the northern part of Lewis County. The estimated value of the plants was $16,000 to $17,000.

Doug Chapman was named branch manager of First Citizens Bank.

David Fuller and Keith Reeves were selected as LCMS Raider Football Players of the Week.

Marine 2nd Lieutenant Robert Rawdon graduated from the Basic School at Quantico, VA.

Dr. Michael Peery, D.D.S. announced that he would open a full-time practice in Hohenwald on September 24.

Mr. and Mrs. Earl Baker celebrated their 50th anniversary with a reception at Graymere Church of Christ in Columbia.

C. J. Holloway was honored for his 88th birthday with party given by friends and family members.

Funeral services were held for George Anderson, 76; Mary Baker, 73; Thomas Denny, 84; and for Lena Milan, 69.

“Joy of Sex” was the weekend movie showing at the Highlands Drive-in Theatre.

September 8, 1994

Hohenwald Mayor Guy Nicholson signed a proclamation naming September 17-23 as Constitution Week in Hohenwald.

The City of Hohenwald announced that it would be sending customers a sewer survey. The survey would be used to gather data necessary to applying for a $450,000 Community Block Grant to upgrade the sewer system.

Over 13,000 attended the South Central Area Fair, with 4,000 fairgoers attending Saturday evening. The demolition derby was the biggest draw with contestants from Lewis and several other counties participating.

The annual Volksmarch was scheduled for September 17 at Meriwether Lewis Park.

Clark Carroll won a Texaco Havoline battery operated race car which was given away during the grand opening of Spears Jr. Food Mart.

Doris Burkett was honored for her 80th birthday with a party held by her nursing assistant.

Funeral services were held for William Hull, Jr., 71; Effie McClearen, 97; and for Gene Woodard, 68.

September 9, 2004

Nicholas Church, a local youth and member of the Navy Sea Cadet program, led the Hohenwald City Council in the Pledge of Allegiance during their September meeting.

Zimmermann Karate Studio would host their 24th Annual Open Championship on September 11.

The Hohenwald Police Department presented the following employees with service awards: Larry Hensley, 10 years with the HPD, 24 years in law enforcement; and Gary D. Turner, 10 years with the HPD, 16 years in law enforcement.

The LCHS Panthers defeated Waverly with a score of 14 to 0. Chris Hatton led the team in rushing with 18 carries for 107 yards.

Ryan and Chanda Dunaway announced the birth of their daughter, Analeaha Claire.

Funeral services were held for Grace Chessor, 90.

Terry and Joyce Keathley ran an ad inviting the community to a meeting at Palestine Cemetery on September 12 to view tombstone damage and discuss the restoration of the cemetery.
