“Hey, Jo, Are people allowed to fly drones over private property?”

In the U.S., drone laws regarding flying over private property are still evolving, but here are some important issues, you might want to keep in mind:

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) controls airspace above 400 feet, and below that, it’s considered navigable airspace, where drones can legally fly. However, drones must comply with FAA regulations, including not flying recklessly or invading privacy.

While Flying over private property is generally legal, if the drone operator is recording or invading someone’s privacy (e.g. filming without consent or looking into windows), this can be lead to legal issues under state laws regarding trespassing, harassment or invasion of privacy.

Some states and local jurisdiction have their own rules about drone usage over private property. For example, certain states may restrict drones from flying over private land or have laws protecting landowners’ privacy.

In short, while people can generally fly drones over private property, they must respect FAA rules and avoid violating privacy laws.

It’s always a good idea to check local regulations.

Until next time...Stay curious and keep smiling. - Jo
