Fake Calls/Texts from individuals posing as law enforcement

Several surrounding counties have found it necessary to release a statement regarding posing as a police officer. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office released the following statement:

“It has been brought to the attention of the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office that someone is calling and sending text messages to citizens of Lawrence County and the surrounding counties posing as one of our investigators. The person is impersonating Sergeant Garrett Brown, who is an actual investigator with our department. It appears that this person’s intent is to defraud victims out of money by informing them that there is a warrant for their arrest or other similar story and is requesting the citizen to obtain either gift cards or a money gram to pay for their bond. These texts or calls are not legitimate and Law Enforcement will NEVER instruct you to do this. If you receive one of these calls or texts, please notify the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office at 931-762-3626 or 931-762-1608.
